predictions for 2018!!

its that time once again for junior soothsayers and mediums of the clairvoyant variety to make some predictions about what will come to pass in 2018.

They can be Trump specific, such as this gem from tecoyah:

Quote:

...my guess however is an impeachment in 2018 and prison for much of his family and staff.
or they can relate to anything in the world in terms of politics, wars, technology, etc. So please have at it!...

arcturus88 November 21st, 2017 09:36 AM

my predictions, so far...:

- stocks will take a sharp dip, around the half year mark
- a nuke meltdown / misfire will occur somewhere in the world
- Kim Kardashian, Johnny Depp and Billy Idol will pass away
- a volcano will erupt in Italy killing several hundred
- a famous Hollywood elite with kill himself due to sex scandal
- war will intensify between Saudi Arabia and Iran
(this may be where the nuke occurs)
- mass shootings in US will decline
- suicide rate will increase
- there will be a serious attempt on DJT's life. It will fail
- there will be a silly attempt at impeachment. It will fail
- Puerto Rico will become a state

I predict at least one former (USA) President will die.

David November 21st, 2017 11:06 AM

I'm not going to say anything about Trump as that's been done to death.

In either 2018/19 (unless Congress does something big) the subprime auto/student loan bubble will burst and we'll slip into recession.
Dem wave not only in DC but in state capitals (in those states that have elections) as well. Many of these newcomers will be radicals as happened to the Repubs (just replace rasism with socialism/social democracy) when they swept into power.
There will be a major announcement on the topic of general AI. Perhaps a (computationally) human level AI but more likely something like Walson getting a major boost to it's ability to independently learn. Regardless it'll have major implications for the tech community.
NASA will announce yet another 'Earth Like' exoplanets but this time with aspheric data that will prove the existence of a stable atmosphere (probably not breathable) and liquid water.

I think the above are likely.

I think we are a long, long way from human level AI. Pattern recognition is still in its infancy.

Reliable analysis of exoplanet atmospheres will not occur next year, but is likely within ten years. If oxygen is a sizable component of an exoplanet atmosphere, then it is almost certain it was produced by life as we know it. Oxygen is such a reactive element that it could not exist for long without biological processes replenishing it.

I qualified that statement for a reason. ;) We (we as in Humans, the Chinese if you want to be precise) have a supercomputer just a few terabytes shy of matching the copentatinal power of the human brain. Moore's Law says we'll fill that gap quickly. An AI that can actually emulate a human's personality and emotional state is further off though I'd still say inside a decade based on the level current tech and keeping in mind how much better tech there is floating around in a top secret R&D lab.

My vision of the future is long-term; I don't do short-term, too many variables.

However, I think it is safe to say that the American Oligarchs will continue to shaft and exploit the American people this coming year.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes that you can't seem to get de-obsessed about.

Ok it wasn't a Hollywood elite, but a political figure and it wasn't 2018, but it did happen after my prediction... so close, kind of...

Quote:

The death of a state representative -- who apparently committed suicide Wednesday after being accused of molestation -- sent more shock waves through a Kentucky Statehouse already rocked by other sexual misconduct scandals.

State Rep. Dan Johnson, 57, appeared to have shot himself just days after a woman reportedly alleged that he had sexually assaulted her on New Year’s Day in 2013 when she was 17, according to police and the local coroner. An autopsy was planned for Thursday.

I predict:

Booming Economy

Ralph47 January 1st, 2018 08:49 AM

I predict the oppressive, brutal regime in Iran will be overthrown, and a huge move toward DEMOCRACY and freedom of the people will transpire.

I furthermore predict it will have a domino effect, and a surprise takedown the rule by the buffoons in North Korea will happen internally, w/o any need U.S. boots on the ground.

My friend, you are too optimistic. Like what had happened in China and the Soviet Union, any uprising in Iran and North Korea will be brutally crushed by tanks to ensure the survival of the dictatorial regimes. There is a Chinese saying, "A geomancer can deceive you for 8 to 10 years." However, it will take just one year (that is, by the end of 2018) to find out whose prediction (that is, whether mine or yours) will come true.

I think that Britain's politicians will find a way to stay in the EU. Whether it actually reverses the referendum or negotiates a trade deal that mimics our current situation a way will be found.

The likelihood of a King Charles in the next few years might make this a reality.
God Save the Queen.
