origins of political correctness

an interesting read:

Quote:
We call it “Political Correctness.” The name originated as something of a joke, literally in a comic strip, and we tend still to think of it as only half-serious. In fact, it’s deadly serious. It is the great disease of our century, the disease that has left tens of millions of people dead in Europe, in Russia, in China, indeed around the world. It is the disease of ideology. PC is not funny. PC is deadly serious.

The Origins of Political Correctness

I can relate to the doom and gloom of this article relating to PC. I find it to be a disturbing tool of the left to ultimately control thoughts and speech.

So what's your stand on political correctness?

You can't really pin PC on the left. PC is, as the name suggests, using terms that agree with the mainstream political view. Trump is a great example of this. Saying Mexicans are murderers and rapists is PI, saying he wants to control the US-Mexico border better however is PC (crossing back into PI territory when he starts talking about a wall). The idea that the left is PC is born of the right's tendency to turn mundane political terminology into dirty words then pinning them on the left, PC being just 1 of many examples.

According to the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, Kremlin advisers were the first to widely use the term. They did so without a trace of irony. Calling someone “politically correct” in Soviet Russia meant they toed the party line. A PC Kremlin insider was one who could reflect what Moscow was thinking—exactly the sort of person who would go far.

When “politically correct” first entered common English, it was used almost exclusively by left-wing groups to poke fun at themselves. New Left feminists deployed it to make fun of the old guard who spent too much time worrying about how to define things like a “feminist sexuality.” Progressives used it to mock their trade union–affiliated elders. Others used it as a reminder to avoid becoming like the Russia-sponsored lefties of old.

The Unlikely Origins Of The Phrase 'Politically Correct' - KnowledgeNuts
Politically correct (политкорректно) was originally a Kremlin term for toeing the party line and it does have Marxist roots. Perhaps this term is the biggest cultural export from Soviet Russia to the West and many lefties in the US may have actually been Soviet spies during the Cold War.

American socialists had been 1 of the Soviet Union's greatest critics. Had there actually been a 5th column like McCarthy imagined, there'd have been a pro-Soviet rebellion in the 60s, instead we had pot loving peace/civil rights advocates.

No, my point was on the larger issue of boogeyman rhetoric.

I am not a politician, so political correctness does not apply to me.

Political correctness is a term made up by racists and fascists to attack decency in all its forms.

Oooh that's very cynical...
I rather suspected it was invented by the special snowflakes wanting to mainstream the marginalised instead of letting the marginalised find their own place in a modern world construct....whatever the hell that means...

You're both right. Political correctness originally meant spinlessly supporting whatever political position would win you the most points. The racists and fascists then hijacked the criticism of PC and conflated PC with politeness so they could shut down anyone trying to call them out on their shit.

Actually, being 100% politically correct rather than what is right/appropriate can be indecent to those not benefiting from the excessive correctness.

political correctness has nothing to do with politeness. Read the link.
it has to do with control.

Actually it most certainly does, regardless of your definition.
"
Definition of politically correct
: conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated
— political correctness noun "

Though it has been hijacked by the Trump movement the traditional explanation still exists.

the article is prior to Trump presidency. I encourage you to actually read it, then pick up a copy of 1984 and read it too.
Thanks from Ralph47

That is not an article, it is a speech for political conservatives.
"February 5, 2000, Bill Lind, 334 Comments

An Accuracy in Academia Address by Bill Lind. Variations of this speech have been delivered to various AIA conferences including the 2000 Conservative University at American University"

I prefer agreed upon and non-biased definitions.

I have? Do you know what admittedly means? 1984 and Animal Farm are required HS reading (as literary works, if the political commentary was discussed rightists wouldn't be using it all the time).
