War Crimes, the Deep State, and Praetorian Guards

'
More than 30 Top U.S. Officials Guilty of War Crimes

Quote:
More than 30 top U.S. officials, including presidents G.W. Bush and Obama, are guilty of war crimes or crimes against peace and humanity "legally akin to those perpetrated by the former Nazi regime in Germany," the distinguished American international law authority Francis Boyle charges.

"In international legal terms, the U.S. government itself should now be viewed as constituting an ongoing criminal conspiracy under international law," Besides the presidents, Boyle identified as war criminals Vice Presidents Dick Cheney and Joseph Biden; Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Robert Gates and Leon Panetta; Secretaries of State Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, and Hillary Clinton; National Security Advisors Stephen Hadley, James Jones, and Thomas Donilon; Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte and James Clapper and Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) Directors George Tenet, Leon Panetta, and David Petraeus. In the Pentagon, war criminals include the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff....

The serial aggressions of the U.S. violate such basic documents of international law as the Nuremberg Charter, the Nuremberg Judgment, and the Nuremberg Principles, Boyle said. As well, they violate the Pentagon's own U.S. Army Field Manual 27-10 on The Law of Land Warfare, which applies to the President himself as Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Armed Forces under Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution.

Boyle said the so-called "targeted killing" of human beings in a non-battlefield situation is "pure murder" under basic principles of Anglo-American common law and international criminal law. And in this case, where these murders are both widespread and systematic, these murders constitute a Crime against Humanity under Article 7(1)(a) of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court.

Obdurate Washington

Quote:
...Washington has such a large number of torture deaths from Abu Ghraib to Gitmo to the secret CIA torture centers to endless drone attacks on kids' soccer games, weddings, funerals, medical clinics, schools, farm houses and aid workers.

The evidence is completely clear that Washington has tortured a number of individuals to death and into false confessions and blown to pieces thousands of innocents known as "collateral damage." No one but Washington and its servants denies this....

The holier-than-thou presence that Washington presents to the world is so phony and shopworn that Washington is becoming not only despised but a laughing stock. People cease to fear the "superpower" when they laugh at its folly, hypocrisy and utter stupidity....

Washington is like the drunk in a bar who picks a fight with a bruiser. Washington is full of itself, but Russia and China are not going to put up with a financially busted and militarily overstretched popinjay.

Starting in 1950, the US CIA funded several decades of academic research into “the relative usefulness of drugs, electroshock, violence, and other coercive techniques” to discover a new method of psychological torture - perhaps the most significant revolution in this cruel science during the past four centuries. Instead of a simple physical brutality, these units practiced a distinctive form of psychological torture with wider implications for the military and its society.

The CIA's thousand-page torture manual, distributed to military regimes in Latin America for over 20 years, taught psychological tactics to break down what the Agency called a victim's “capacity to resist”. Through “persistent manipulation of time,” the interrogator can break a victim's will, driving the victim, in the CIA's words, “deeper and deeper into himself, until he is no longer able to control his responses in an adult fashion.”

Suharto was one of the most brutal dictators in history. He ruled for 32 years and continued his savage atrocities under the support of 7 US presidents: Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton.

President Lyndon Johnson authorised a CIA-organized coup that brought Suharto to power in 1965, and the CIA then supervised while Suharto exterminated three million Indonesian communist party members.

They hacked the alleged subversives to death with machetes. Entire populations of towns and villages were herded to central locations and massacred. Children would be asked to identify communists who would then be executed on the spot.

In addition to the half million people who were killed outright after the coup, another 750,000 were arrested and tortured. Ultimately, one million people died in one of the most savage mass slaughters of modern political history. The US continues to this day to train and arm the Indonesian military with the latest high-tech equipment. The US has also recently opened a new "black" "Peace Medicine" installation in Indonesia that is almost certainly a torture laboratory.

I've seen many, many Americans who closely resemble Hitler's Nazis.
Even more than there are Elvis Presleys in the USA.

In fact, apart from all the Hitlers and all the Elvises, there aren't many people left in the USA -- except for the TV-drugged robot-drones -- and as O'Brian said in 1984, "They aren't people."

The American Establishment has been working tirelessly for a quarter of a century to create an enemy which they can pretend is as great a supposed threat as the old Soviet Union, in order that the Military-Industrial Complex can continue to loot America.

By murdering, rampaging, destroying and torturing for years and years in many countries, the respected leaders of America have had some success in achieving their goal.

Remember the scene in George Orwell's 1984? Oceania is at war with Eurasia; Eastasia is its ally. Amidst the delirium and hysteria of Hate Week, there is a rally wild with hate for Eurasia, and banners praising Eastasia. On the platform, an Inner Party orator is haranguing the frenzied crowd:

"His voice, made metallic by the amplifiers, boomed forth an endless catalogue of atrocities, massacres, deportations, lootings, rapings, torture of prisoners, bombing of civilians, lying propaganda, unjust aggressions, broken treaties. It was almost impossible to listen to him without being first convinced, then maddened. At every few movements, the fury of the crowd boiled over and the voice of the speaker was drowned by a wild beast-like roaring that rose uncontrollably from thousands of throats."

After some time, a messenger hurries to the platform and slips a scrap of paper into the speaker's hand. He glances at it and, without missing a beat, continues with his rant.

"...but suddenly the names were different. Without words said, a wave of understanding rippled through the crowd. Oceania was at war with Eastasia! The next moment there was a tremendous commotion. The banners and posters with which the square was decorated were all wrong!... It was sabotage! The agents of Goldstein had been at work! There was a riotous interlude while posters were ripped from the walls, banners torn to shreds and trampled underfoot.... But within two or three minutes it was all over.... The Hate continued exactly as before, except the target had been changed."

Instantly, all good citizens of Oceania know that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia, and Eurasia has always been Oceania's ally....

Can you remember instances like this happening in American politics?

I certainly can.

The Praetorian Guard

Quote:
Following the death of Sejanus, who was sacrificed for the Donativum (imperial gift) promised by Tiberius, the Guards began to play an increasingly ambitious and bloody game in the Empire. With the right amount of money, or at will, they assassinated emperors, bullied their own prefects, or turned on the people of Rome....
In 41 Caligula was killed by conspirators from the senatorial class and from the Guard. The Praetorians placed Claudius on the throne, daring the Senate to oppose their decision.

During 69, the Year of the Four Emperors, after the emperor Galba failed to provide a donative for the Praetorians, they transferred their allegiance to Otho and assassinated the emperor.
Now why is the city of Dallas popping up in my mind? · ·
Quote:
In 193, Didius Julianus purchased the Empire from the Guard for a vast sum, when the Guard auctioned it off after killing Pertinax....
When Constantine the Great, launching an invasion of Italy in 312, forced a final confrontation at the Milvian Bridge, the Praetorian cohorts made up most of Maxentius' army. Later in Rome, the victorious Constantine definitively disbanded the Praetorian Guard. The soldiers were sent out to various corners of the Empire, and the Castra Praetoria was demolished.

It might be worth while to dust off your books on Egyptian history and re-read them.

The Mamelukes

Quote:
Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad unwittingly create a group of considerable power in the Middle East. To strengthen their armies, they acquire slaves from the nomadic Turks of central Asia. These slaves, who become known as Mamelukes (from the Arabic mamluk, 'owned'), distinguish themselves in the service of the caliphate and are often given positions of military responsibility. Well placed to advance their own interests, they frequently take the opportunity.
The first Mameluke to seize extensive power is Ahmad ibn Tulun. In the early 870s he takes control of Egypt. This first Mameluke dynasty lasts only a few decades, until 905. But the Mamelukes retain their importance and power throughout the Middle East. They have the natural strength of a small, self-aware military elite....
In 1250, the last sultan of Saladin's dynasty is murdered in Egypt by the slaves of the palace guard.
[emphases added]

Darn! There is Dallas popping up in my mind again, and a certain last sultan of a dynasty!
Quote:
Eventually their power proves intolerable. Ottoman troops massacre the Mamelukes in Egypt in 1811, and destroy their counterparts in Baghdad in 1831.
It is possible to get rid of Praetorians, but it is usually a little messy.

By the way, the present military class in Egypt bears more than a little resemblance to the Mamelukes. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!

It is also a bit ironic that the present Praetorian Class in America has resemblances to the Nazi Party in Germany and the Communist Party cadres of the Soviet Union.

Well, I suppose, in many ways, one totalitarian society is much like another!

There are two mistakes you can make about totalitarian societies -- one is to think that they are all the same, and the other is to think that they are different !

Thought this article maybe relevant to the discussion...

The Deep State
It does exist but not how you think.

https://geopoliticalfutures.com/the-deep-state/

I would guess it depends on which side of the proverbial political fence your standing on....I recently heard on a radio show that it did not exists. Sorry do not recall the show or the or the guys name doing the talking. Conspiracy Theorists would have us believe that its the government hiding deep dark secrets but the article above says that it was to protect government from politics! WTH! I thought government was politics! Then theres this article from the New Yorker:

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...-no-deep-state

In the last paragraph of that article he states and I quote:

Quote:
The problem in Washington is not a Deep State; the problem is a shallow man—an untruthful, vain, vindictive, alarmingly erratic President.
So obviously no one agrees weather there is a Deep State or not.

The Janissaries were chosen before they reached adulthood from among the Christian population living in Anatolia and the Balkan peninsula to become the elite fighting force of the Ottoman Empire. A portion of these selected children, as they were considered to be more talented, received a higher standard of education to become the ruling class of viziers as well as engineers, architects, physicians and scientists.

The Ottoman sultans had their own version of the Praetorian Guards, known as Janissaries.
Are we beginning to perceive a certain pattern here in despotic regimes? · ·
Quote:
As Janissaries became aware of their own importance they began to desire a better life. By the early 17th century Janissaries had such prestige and influence that they dominated the government. They could mutiny and dictate policy and hinder efforts to modernize the army structure. They could change Sultans as they wished through palace coups....
Finally, after several centuries....
Quote:
Ever mindful of the Janissary threat, the sultan spent the next years discreetly securing his position. The Janissaries' abuse of power, military ineffectiveness, resistance to reform and the cost of salaries to 135,000 men, many of whom were not actually serving soldiers, had all become intolerable. By 1826, the sultan was ready to move. Historian Patrick Kinross suggests that Mahmud II incited them to revolt on purpose, describing it as the sultan's "coup against the Janissaries". The sultan informed them, through a fatwa, that he was forming a new army, organised and trained along modern European lines. As predicted, they mutinied, advancing on the sultan's palace. In the ensuing fight, the Janissary barracks were set in flames by artillery fire resulting in 4,000 Janissary fatalities. The survivors were either exiled or executed, and their possessions were confiscated by the Sultan. This event is now called the Auspicious Incident. The last of the Janissaries were then put to death by decapitation in what was later called the blood tower, in Thessaloniki.
The usual "Auspicious" end to praetorian guards! · ·
Of course, by that time, the rot had gone too far, and the Ottoman Empire, for the rest of its time, was known as the "Sick Man of Europe."
Something the USA can look forward to!!

John Stockwell

Quote:
John R. Stockwell is a former CIA officer who became a critic of United States government policies after serving in the Agency for thirteen years serving seven tours of duty. After managing U.S. involvement in the Angolan Civil War as Chief of the Angola Task Force during its 1975 covert operations, he resigned and wrote In Search of Enemies, a book which remains the only detailed, insider's account of a major CIA "covert action."
QUOTES

* "It is the function of the CIA to keep the world unstable, and to propagandize and teach the American people to hate and fear, so we will let the Establishment spend any amount of money on arms."

* "Enemies are necessary for the wheels of the U.S. military machine to turn."

* "Short, successful military adventures are as effective as the Super Bowl in diverting peoples' attention from unpleasant truths."

In 1980, Stockwell said,

* "if the Soviet Union were to disappear off the face of the map, the United States would quickly seek out new enemies to justify its own military-industrial complex."

The Secret Wars of the CIA

Quote:
When the world has gotten blocked up before, like a Monopoly game where everything is owned and nobody can make any progress, the way they erase the board and start over has been to have big world wars. Erase countries, bomb cities, and bomb banks, and then start from scratch again. This is not an option to us now, because of all these fifty-two thousand nuclear weapons....

Now, how do you teach torture? Someone can teach you about torture, but sooner or later you have to get involved. You have to lay on your hands and try it yourself. They would pick up guinea pigs off the streets: beggars, and take them in to use in these torture training classes. Of course, the horror of that is, these people wouldn't know why they were being tortured. They couldn't give up. They couldn't say: "I'm sorry! Stop the pain! I'll tell you the names of everybody involved!" All they could do was lie there and scream!
When they would collapse, they would bring in doctors who would shoot them up with Vitamin B and rest them up for the next class. And when they would die, they would mutilate the bodies and throw them out on the streets to terrify the population, so that everybody would be afraid of the police and the Government. This is what the CIA was teaching them to do.
