previously you stated the reason would be different for each individual:

but here, only a few posts later, you now say everyone arrives there by the golden rule:

maybe rather than trying to speak for all of humanity, just stick with your personal approach.

answers like these just fall short of answering why:

-its self-evident

-just because
-its obvious
-its a no brainer
-end of story

some have answered by pointing to the notion of direct consequences of not doing good (ie punishment). thats a good why, but i question...what if that direct consequence is not there. why do good then?
When one teaches by example (Long term)...the reasons become evident in life and how it unfolds, all the adult need do is point out these "Teaching Moments" as they happen. Educating a child on life is not a course taken in school, It is a lifelong commitment to someone you love and help to form into something the world and you can appreciate and be proud of.

I am satisfied, if not a little disappointed that many don't look very deep into thy "why" of their own moral code. The golden rule is more a "what" than a "why". I mentioned it in my first post as a good option IMHO, but falling short of a reason why. Maybe the why is too scary for some to look at.

Personally, I lead my life based on a belief in Karma and an understanding that I have no idea if anything happens after this.....I guess I'm hedging my bets. The beauty is that by doing so, People tend to like me and I have no enemies.....sweet bonus.

No, it's a reason why. Just because you have to cop out and say God did it and are limited, can't gop any further than that doesn't mean that the entire god concept is based onthe golden rule.

Not everybody is a puppet of some God forsaken church.

The golden rule is why, god is what.

Unthinking blind followers are incredibly arrogant.

It takes far more thought to come up with the golden rule rather than blaming a good thatnobody had ever seen yet miraculously always seems to side with you.

This was my problem with organized Christianity, you guys turned God into some cheerleading side kick.

wow you're really intolerant.

As it is, I'm completely fine and can tolerate all views put forth on this thread. I even agree with many of them (at least in part).

Try re-reading the thread, it seems you are answering your own demons with religion rather than anything I've put out here.
Thanks from Aufgeblassen

No I am not. I tolerate you and your opinions. I just don't agree with them. There is a difference between intolerance and disagreement.

Religion is made up by people. It was based on the golden rule. I don't really have any demons when it comes to religion. I am just mature enough to know it's for people that can't think for themselves. Hence your excuse of why fight is right and wrong is wrong. And your desire to say that your opinion is superior.

unfortunately you seem to be disagreeing with things unsaid in this thread. in other words, stating "atheists are not sociopaths!" . does not counter anything ive said, but it may counter internal feelings you have about religious people or the church, etc. to wit, you're projecting your own stuff here.

try to stay on point when you answer. debating by throwing out red herrings here and there does not constitute good debate and disagreement. its smells more like intolerance.

small example:

yet, earlier on I posted...

I'd say its similar to aufgablassen posting irrelevant photos in your thread. it doesn't add anything to the debate. it just detracts from it.

My statement that the golden rule is WHY right is right and wrong is wrong absolutely countered what you said. The only thing religion adds to the golden rule is that it applys it to God.

I did. You wanted to bicker further about it because there isno need for a god to be the reason why right is right. Standard bull headed arrogant Christian fashion. It's a wonder I left the church. Having 500 of you bicker reality with me was exhausting.
