Steve Jobs built his business in his parents garage. A garage that was part of a mortgage from banks that the government used to regulate (Glass-Steigel). When the government (read Clinton, Bush) decided that expansion trumped prudence, that regulation was abandoned, and there are no more garages for most of the young entrepreneurs. How sad, now that the conservatives say that 'govment' interference is the problem. I guess if you outsource jobs and material, then you get free enterprise, but unfortunately, it doesn't include either American jobs or a level playing field for American innovation. Oh well, conservatives think that we will make it up in volume. Supply and demand, and all that.

Two points Mogur: The housing crisis was a failure of government as well as the market. Outsourcing is not necessarily a bad thing even for Americans (it is also pretty much unstoppable in some cases).

I think both sides are misusing what the President actually said. He didn't say a person can't build a business without government's help. In essence, he was expanding on the idea of "it takes a village". We are what we are because of our parents, mentors/teachers, friends and even strangers who work together for the common cause and their own benefit such as building roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

From the President's speech:
Quote:
There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Road Warrior, I completely agree- it was definitely taken out of context. Kind of why I haven't commented on it much- the controversy is a side show.

Agreed it's a side show. It's all part our our quadrennial Silly Season entertainment package.

Last time we have Birthers. This time we see the flip-side with Romney Tax Returners. "Show me the papers!!!" As if that would really satisfy those who are making a stink about it. Even after the President showed his long form, we still have Arizona sheriffs and billionaires declaring it to be a fake. Romney could show 5 years worth of tax returns and we'd have people screaming "Why didn't he show 6? What is he hiding???"
