It is still early, but I was wondering how all of you expect the 2010 elections to turn out- will we see major shifts in Congress in terms of majorities? What issues will be especially important? What states might flip over?

Personally, I think the Democrats will lose seats in both the Senate and the House, by how much will really depend on what happens with the stimulus, cap and trade, and healthcare. More than that though, I care about the idealogies and thankfully it seems like there will be more pro-libety candidates in 2010, and I do expect atleast a few of them to get victories. Still is early and things can change a lot, but as of now I am pretty optimistic.

I think people will have time to realize what has happened. And there will be a price to pay for drinking the Koolaide. They are passing things now they have never read. Oh well!

Eventually they will realize, there is no doubt about that- it is just a matter of when.

I think the Democrats will gain seats. I don't think the Republican attempts to blame the current financial situation on the Democrats after only a few months in office will wash. Republicans got us into this mess, and they will pay in more loss of power.

Time will tell. The democrats can't hide behind republicans for the full 4 years. Someday people will look at them and ask, am I really better off or just deeper in the hole to China?

Why do you say the Republicans were responsible for the "mess"? The cumulative debt has quite a large contribution from the Democrats during the Clinton years. The way Obama is going, we're into trillions now, and he has barely started yet.

The Republicans put us in an unnecessary and fruitless war while cutting taxes. And while Clinton removed some regulations, the bulk were removed by Republicans. The Republicans ignored signs that we were in financial trouble. The Republicans denied scietific evidence and ordered people to change reports. The Republicans lived in a fantasy world where cutting taxes is the solution to everything.

I honestly care less everyday what happens in the elections. They asked for it and they got it. Good or bad I did not do it this time.:(

Both sides are too damn dumb to put politics aside and quit playing the "blame game". So as a people we deserve just what we get. And that is all I have to say about elections.

Curious, you really need to get your facts straight. Cutting taxes was not what caused this crisis. The housing bubble was created mostly due to extremely low rates by the Federal Reserve and government backing through the likes of Fannie and Freddie. Democrats had been pushing to make the GSEs larger for years and if you look at Bush's 2001 remarks, he clearly stated that he believed they needed to be cut back. Democrats didn't listen and with 9-11, the cuts never happened. The Federal Reserve and its low rates were driven by Greenspan and the idea that low rates would mean great growth- which it does, except for the fact that overly low rates mean bubbles. What is Bernanke doing right now? The exact same thing that Greenspan did after the tech bubble burst- interest rates are at all time lows. Look at the facts curious. How did low taxes or the war (don't get me wrong, I never supported the war and still don't) cause the housing mess? They didn't.

And as DodgeFB said, this blame game is really getting old because in reality is both sides fault. Democrats have been pushing this GSE nonsense since the days of FDR and Bush failed to stop it even though he recognized it. Both parties supported Greenspan and his low rates. Look at the individuals, not the parties curious and you will see that both sides had people to blame. You know who didn't support Greenspan and his low rates and the GSEs? You know who continually tried to cut down Fannie/Freddie? That was the true free market capitalists. Those were the people like Ron Paul.

Right, the debt issue is less of a Party issues than it is of a system of Government finance. I wonder whether research has been done about how the 4-year timespan of an elected President effects this huge debt. As part of getting "immediate" financing for all the programmes must have to do with wishing to be re-elected again, and having to show as much progress as possible in the shortest period of time.

That is one of the big problems in our current government- too many lawmakers care about the politics more than the issues, so they think in the short term so that they can get reelected even if that means a bad future. We really need to start electing honest men once more...

1. When was the last time a politician seriously had any integrity?

2. There's not exactly much of a democratic choice, is there?

- Democrats or Republicans?
- Erm, can i choose something else?
- If you like.
- It's just they don't seem particularly different...
- I see. So who do you choose?
- Something else?
- Ooh, bad choice...
- Really? How come?
- Only an idiot votes for a minor party.
- What do you mean?
- Well, it's not as if they stand any chance.
- Oh.
- Well?
- Well what? What do i choose? What do i choose out of two groups that will do nothing for me and work for their own ends?
- Well, when you say it like that it doesn't sound very democratic, but yeah, that's about right!
- Well, screw that! I'll just abstain, since no candidate is worth the effort.
- ...
- ...
- You'd be an idiot not to take your democratic right to vote.

There are some out there, but the ones without integrity far out number them.
I have not seen a really outstanding leader for a long time now. Is it possible because political leaders are trying to be more popular than they used to be in the past, being worried about ratings? Bush was not, but in my view he was not an outstanding leader, just an effective decision maker. But are there examples of really outstanding political leaders in our current times?

The only difference between politicians in an autocracy and politicians in a "democracy" is that the latter have to lie better.

 Not sure what you mean. Question was whether you knew of any present leaders who are quite outstanding as political leaders?
