Arab Spring Watch

On July 27 before the military crackdown on the pro-Morsi protesters in Egypt, I have expressed my view of the so-called "Arab Spring" in another forum.

"Instead of being a symbol of hope, revival and democracy, the so-called 'Arab Spring' could end up as one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Middle East and Arab northern Africa. Like a giant snake swallowing its own tail, the trauma could last for a very long time, possibly more than one generation, and the bloody conflict could engulf the whole region."

truly an amazing prediction.

To: Dear future US Secretary of State tecoyah,

Thanks for your generous praise.

If my so-called prediction comes true, all the people here, including both of us, would never see the outcome in our lifetime as the bloody conflict in the Middle East could last more than one generation.

However, if everybody could see the outcome of my so-called prediction in his lifetime, I have to find a place to hide my face. This is definitely not the outcome I like to see.

In my opinion...anyone imagining the Middle Eastern societies becoming peaceful and pleasant to each other...let alone anyone else, is either dreaming, or ignorant of both the current and historical realities in play.

These people will find a reason to kill each other, and many others for another few centuries....at least.

Best to let them do so, and possibly try again in 50 yrs. or so.

Well said. With such similar opinion from the future "US Secretary of State", I am more confident that the events in the Middle East, particularly Egypt and Syria, are moving more and more in the direction of my so-called prediction.

Colonialism is something from before most every person on Earth was even born!

Quit living in the distant past!!!

BTW: What is the source of your brainwashing?

Colonialism exists when one country controls another for commercial advantage, as the US controls much of the world. Grow up!

I always assumed it involved some type of Colony, rather than economic influences.

Nowadays nobody has 'colonies' because everyone knows that is a bad thing, just as everyone is against 'racism'. That doesn't mean boys are not subject to summary execution for the crime of shopping-whilst-'black', and in the same way you don't nowadays need a Governor General to have colonies. When did the last British government, for instance, do anything contrary to American interests and for its own population?

I think I get it now....basically cooperation and ally status is the new colonialism.

A bit like the 'allies' of Athens when the Athenians fought Sparta, or the 'allies' of Sparta indeed: a few well-paid yes-men, free as birds to do exactly what they were told, or else.

its possible that this, the arab spring, is a necessary collective evolution towards a real democracy. however, i think they need to fight it out on their own terms. we did with our revolutionary war and our own civil war.

suffering produces value.

liberal ideology of mitigating all suffering of the masses is where we get it wrong. where would our values be if our revolutionary war and civil war was augmented or shouldered by some big brother country trying to prevent our suffering?
