Contempt of Parliament

So I was reading in the Toronto Sun today a pretty good article (I know, seldom are good articles found in the Sun) on what transpired on Parliament Hill this past week.

The Speaker of the House of Commons ruled that the government must open up and disclose documents to opposition MP's. Those documents relate to Afghanistan and possibly the treatment of Afghan citizens detained by the Canadian Armed Forces on suspicion of being terrorists. He gave all the political parties until May 11 to reach a compromise. If no compromise is made, then some Ministers like the Defence Minister can be imprisoned by Parliament for being in contempt!

Unfortunately I think no good will come from this. The opposition parties only want the documents to bleed support from the governing Conservatives. That's their only motivation. My concern is that these documents will put the safety of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan at risk.

What does everyone else think?

I would be horrified as a Defense Minister. First thing that will be logical, if this rule should be passed, is that all the other parties involved in Afghanistan would be less open in their communications with the Canadian Government. It would put the safety of Canadian soldiers at risk, for sure. However, I'm sure this is all just political posturing and game playing, I can't believe that the opposition party would allow the safety of Canadian soldiers to be at risk. They probably understand they can't get all the information, but they probably would like a compromise where they would gain something in return. We probably would never get to hear the truth of what the compromise is, they probably would prepare some or other communique for public consumption.
