Florida Law Would Make It A Crime For Transgender People To Use Public Bathrooms
tl;dr Floridian Republicans have proposed a bill that would make it a misdemeanor for a transgender to go to the wrong bathroom (or any sex segregated area).
On the surface, this looks like more discrimination by the Repubs but there are logical reasons to support this bill and Repubs are actually making said arguments. There's a reason gays have to go to men's areas and lesbians women's. Sexual orientation/identity are irreverent if physical reality disagrees. A homosexual or transgender (that hasn't had a sex change) going into the wrong area is just as inappropriate as a straight person doing the same. This law both avoids awkward situations and keeps perverts from playing the transgender card to legally engage in their predation. The ONLY part of this bill I disagree with (and this is where legislative amendments come in as any civilly minded person would know) is the blanket ban on transgenders. Any transgender that has done a complete sex change should still be bound by this law but as if they were born to their 'sex'. Such people, absent genetic testing and advertising the fact, are indistinguishable from normal people and so forcing them to go to the right areas based on biology alone defeats the purpose.
Of course the bill viewed with legal nuance doesn't damage the Repubs in a swing state (Florida) or discredit the 2 most likely Repub nominees (both Floridians) in a presidential election that the Dems lose their incumbent advantage in (due to Obama terming out). BS like this needs to be called out when it happens and as soon as it happens no matter where it comes from or we'll keep electing bad governments.
