Outstanding. Not entirely sure how effective it will be, but it certainly sends a message to Iran that if they wish to go forth with their plans and defy the world, there will be consequences and be hit in the wallet.

These sanctions are very harsh and uncommon, but am pleased to see them.

I disagree. Sanctions hurt the people of all nations involved and there are better ways to go about this.

And what would those better ways be? We sure don't want a boots on the ground war. If things get tough enough on the "people" maybe they will have a "Arab Spring" type cleaning of their leadership. At the very least they will have less money to sponsor terrorism around the world.

I am sure it will even make my life tougher due to the damn speculators jacking up oil prices. But they do that at the slightest opportunity anyway. But it was time to wipe that sickening smirk off Ahmadinejad's face.

The EU has banned importing oil from Iran as well as placed more sanctions on the country in protest of Iran's nuclear program. Politicians in Tehran are responding with threats of ending shipments starting immediately or blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

All this, caused by US interference in a nation's right to run their own nuclear programme. I quite wonder what would have happened if the world banned all importation of US products after they began their own nuclear program? Hmmm? **** the USA.

The same nation's right to threaten other countries too?

"Israel should be wiped off map, says Iran's president

Anybody who recognises Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury, [while] any [Islamic leader] who recognises the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world.

There is no doubt that the new wave [of attacks] in Palestine will wipe off this stigma [Israel] from the face of the Islamic world (...) As the imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map."

The even bigger problem here is Russia and China and their lack of co-operation with the West on Iran. Israel would need to attack Iran if it's in a position where they fear lives are at risk. And all this talk about Palestinians and their rights from the Iranian government, is just rant, I mean if Iran were to go through with this plan many Palestinians would die too, but of course Ahmadinejad doesn't give a f**k about them, as long as he can kill a lot of Jews.

That BS? He was quoting modern Iran's founder and the quote only called for regime change, not genocide.

Then might I suggest a different formulation? I don't believe that for one second, Ahmadinejad and the Ayatollah would know better then to use those kinda words, unless there's a huge translation problem, which I think would be detected during the 6 and half years this has been in the news, we all know what "wipe off" means.

Let me just say that I would put nothing past Ahmadinejad! For some reason he fits my vision of evil.

Agreed.

I do understand Israel's need need in this case to attack Iran. Maybe that's Ahmadinejad plan, to provoke the West and Israel to an attack but the Israelis are not willing to sacrifice their own land on what might be and what might not be. The EU has followed up on that, which is very good news.

Looks like the pinch is beginning to have some effect.

Iran sanctions "biting" in recent weeks: CIA chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran is feeling the bite from economic sanctions imposed over its nuclear program, which is capable of producing a weapon although Iranian leaders have not yet decided to do so, top U.S. intelligence chiefs told Congress on Tuesday.

"The sanctions have been biting much, much more literally in recent weeks than they have until this time," CIA Director David Petraeus said at a Senate intelligence committee hearing.

"What we have to see now is how does that play out, what is the level of popular discontent inside Iran, does that influence the strategic decision-making of the Supreme Leader and the regime, keeping in mind that the regime's paramount goal in all that they do is their regime survival," he said.

Iran's currency, the rial, has lost "considerable value" and there have been "runs on the bank" as Iranians try to dump domestic currency and acquire assets that will hold value better as inflation "takes off," Petraeus said.
