How much of a threat is China?

It seems like they are getting bolder and bolder by the day. Yesterday, they harrased one of our intelligence ships....in international waters!

After the Impeccable alerted the Chinese ships "in a friendly manner" that it was seeking a safe path to depart the area, two of the Chinese ships stopped "directly ahead of USNS Impeccable, forcing Impeccable to conduct an emergency 'all stop' in order to avoid collision," the statement said.
"They dropped pieces of wood in the water directly in front of Impeccable's path."

...the Chinese crew members used poles to try to snag the Impeccable's acoustic equipment in the water.

Look the pictures, too it's blatantly obvious what they did.

And Chinese response? The United States was violating international law...yet they have no proof.

And this isn't the only incident. It's no secret that they hack into US government computers at a nearly daily basis. While we are all so concered and focus on the Mid-East, I think we need to take a close look at the Far-East as well.

I mean, countries play 'games' on each other all the time with these little tricks but this hardly qualifies. This is dangerous and downright provocative.

Right now I don't think China is a threat. They have too many business links to us right now that it wouldn't be in their benefit to break those. However I do think that since our economy is crap, it's making them upset because they are starting to lose money on us. If they get motivated I think the most they'll do at first is to stop doing business with us. If they decided to attack us for some reason, they'd have to deal with Europe along with us.

But maybe there is a silver lining. I mean America is becoming a socialist country slowly but surely. So maybe by the time China wants to attack, they couldn't because we already joined the Communist party?

Wow, now I'm depressed.

China could destroy our economy and yes it would mean their own too but militarily they are quite formidable. I have to say it but while their technology may not be as up to date as ours, they have sheer numbers and are quite resourceful.

It doesn't necessarily mean all of Europe versus us. I have no doubt Russia and some of the former Warsaw-Pact countries would come after us as well.

Well china's actions are undoubtedly getting bolder by each coming day . They are acquiring technology from all possible means even by using unethical methods like hacking . China could very well be a threat to the whole world in the recent future !

I think China is an enormous threat to world peace and stability. They have already created enormous trade imbalances in the world with their dumping of cheap products all over the world. It is a BIG country, with an enormous population, a totally different culture, and very aggressive. Right now there is peace, but I am worried about extremists as it would be easy for another Mao Tse Tung charismatic leader to show his face. Think it is also posturing though for effect. Latest of cause has been on the environment and saying that companies who have offshore factories in China need to clean it up. The China Navy has also been harassing the USNS Impeccable Navy Ship that has been monitoring China submarine actvity in the Pacific Ocean. China has in recent years been building Nuclear Ballistic Submarines and navy bases that the US is obviously had to monitor. More information at the shortcut below:

I think the Chinese are way too interested in being rich too mess too much with anyone. And I think we were spying, so a bit guilty. Harrassment is sometimes just a case of military leaders wanting a little practice. When my ex was in the Navy, during Vietnam, they would do all sorts of things to mess a bit with the Russians, and vice versa. They essentially held sort of unofficial joint war games in the Med. If you've seen Top Gun, you know what I mean. We tried to fool them into false evaluations of our capabilities, and they did the same.

I can't agree that the Chinese are only interested in "being rich". I believe that their dumping of products on the international markets is deliberate, focussed and an attempt at world domination. Especially after Russia became no real threat to them any more, they have been in a good position of expanding their power over the world, and no better place to do that than in the field of economy, as well as expanding its oil resources.

Gee, that sounds exactly like the things other countries say about the US. Maybe you are right. I was thinking in terms of a military threat.

Right now the Chinese are keeping the US solvent by buying up Treasury bills. They have so much cash invessted in the US, they have to help prop us up or they'll lose most of their cash reserves.

I would not be able to think of the US as dumping products. If China is buying Treasy Bills, obviously they are loaning money to the US, that is making the US even more vulnerable to China.

If China takes us out, then they'll go bankrupt and their economy will crash. They are a country that relies on exports to thrive. Why would you take out your biggest buyer?

They have loaned a lot of money to us, but it doesn't really change anything on the political level. If anything, it ties us together more and gives them a higher interest in not damaging our currency.

While it gives them a lot of power, it also gives them a huge stake in the welfare of the US. I've read, though, that they are putting more money into the Euro now, as well as spending more to stimulate their economy.

I don't trust China though. I don't trust Governments as a rule, but I believe China is least transparent of the lot. I really believe they are motivated by a passion of world domination and the US knows that.

China isn't really any different than we were back in the period after WWII. They are just enjoying a period of industrial growth and commercial power.
