Saudia Cleric approves child marriage

That's wrong, kids don't have the proper judgment to make informed decisions when it comes to marriage. Some adults can't even properly do so, just look at the divorce rates!

That cleric needs some help, and I hope that becomes ratified soon as it might cause problems later on..

This, unfortunately part of the problem of the Islamic culture. It's not embedded into the religion, its the culture and society that have formed around it.

This is so wrong and reading things like this make me sick. I just don't understand why anyone would want their 8 year old daughter to marry so early, let alone marrying a man of that age! Whats all this about him having to sign a pledge that he wont have sex with her until she reaches puberty??? Now come on, everyone knows that a girl could start puberty at the age she is now, yet she isn't ready for sex! What is the point in having a legal age to have sex if it just goes out of the window??

Well apparently not everyone agrees with that man as a Saudi organization disagrees with that concept luckily. I hope that they protect children and disallow marriage at that age. As for the cultural difference, it is true that in different cultures certain people have different roles, but a child should not be given such a harsh role at an early age. If marriage stresses out an adult, imagine what it could do to a child!?

Thats really disturbing. Kids can't even make rational decisions at that age let along have the mental capacity for the responsibilities of marriage.

You know what the irony is even if they are kids or adults, they cannot make any decision on their own because the girls their are not allowed to go against the will of their parents. muslims are allowed to have 4 wives which is ok according to their religion but the problem is that in some extreamist parts the no of wives exceeds and the major portion of this no are children who are forced by their parents and the so called clerics.

I'm interested in what makes you all experts on what is right and wrong. We live in a world of many different cultures. The age of consent differs from country to country. Here in the UK it is 16. In America? In Greece? It's not right or wrong, it's just different. Failing to understand and respect other cultures is all that is wrong here.

Depends, people tend to forget that America is an alliance rather then a single state. In Florida, it's 16.

Science has come a long way since the times of Mohammed. We know now scientifically that children are not just small adults. They are not yet fully formed either mentally or physically and require the protection of society. In most cultures their parents suffice, but obviously that has broken down in parts of the world. What is happening to those children is just plain morally wrong by anybody's standards no matter who tries to say otherwise.

Nawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Some posts just come from a Walter Mitty world. :giggle:

If there's grass on the field, play cricket.

I jest, but when a female reaches sexual maturity she can pro-create and it can be argued this is something that should not be prevented. This can happen as young as 11 or 12.

On the other hand there are 16/17/16/21/25/30 year olds who are not mentally or emotionally equipped to deal with having children, or having adult relationships. But society says that's okay?

Do you alweays blindly follow society? Are you a sheep and society the shepard? ;)

Understood that you are jesting. But as an argument against for the physical part of it, medical practitioners may differ on this, as the female's physical parts have not matured enough to carry a baby to term at that age. It could tear her apart. Mentally she is definitely not prepared yet. Maybe 14 at the very earliest. But definitely not at 10.
