After a week of hints and uncertainty, President Donald Trump said Thursday he would announce tariffs on imported steel and aluminum but with temporary exemptions for Canada and Mexico as he seeks to revise the North American Free Trade Agreement. He suggested Australia and "other countries" might also be spared, a shift that could soften the international blow amid threats of retaliation by trading partners.

Will Paul Ryan be happy with import tariffs on Harley Davidsons or Kentucky Bourbon from Mitch Mcconnell's neck of the woods?

I was interested that your Trump fella has imposed these tariffs based on national security grounds (under Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act of 1962) yet all EU countries are members of NATO, so how does that work. Then he tweets and gives briefings that they are a safeguard measure which is an entirerly different set of circumstances under WTO rules so is he setting himself up to lose a legal battle?

Ummm...it is not imported if it comes from the same country!

In case a NATO country is taken over by a non-NATO country and then is no longer one.

It is very dangerous to have to rely on other countries for strategic supplies. Friendly or not.

That's not the issue. Under Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act of 1962 within WTO rules retaliatory sactions are not legal but if all that is being said i.e. Trump is stating safeguarding US jobs, then counter-tariffs are legal under the regulations depending upon the outcome of talks.

You were talking about EXPORTS (Harleys & Bourbon), not imports, you silly goose! Nobody is proposing export taxes!

How simple do you want to make this?
Do you have clue about what’s happening over the imposition of steel and aluminium tariffs? Do you know for example that they will (at the moment) include Europe?
If you don’t have a clue just post a picture and we’ll leave it at that.

It is a very simple truth. It is risky to depend on a foreign government for strategic materials for the simple reason that government may not act according to our national interest. For instance, sell the material to someone else instead because it is in their best interest.

When awarding contracts, the military looks at the supply chain and if it any critical part is dependent on a foreign supplier, that contract will likely be awarded to someone else. I realize, this example is a slightly different case, but it illustrates the importance the military puts on reliable sources.

Yeah, Canada was ready to send oil to China instead, if the Keystone XL pipeline wasn't going to happen.

The Tariff Threat was simply a crude way to threaten Canada and Mexico to make them cave on the Nafta "negotiations."

It has just made people here angry about such strong-arm tactics.

I would be overjoyed to see Nafta collapse --- it was only implemented by the traitor Mulroney to give Canada to the USA through economic subversion.
