Will Trump become United State's Fuhrer? Do we now have a generation of voters who don't understand or care why he's considered to be similar to Hitler?

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as referring to the then newly created United States government as a "republic, if we can keep it". That constitution is of a democratic-republic government. Do USA voters really understand and want to retain our democratic-republic?

I've recently encountered a few Washington Post columns referring to USA opinions between different generations of ages with regard to the comparative need and/or importance, of democracy in our national republic:
Opinion| Will you join the supermajority for constitutional democracy? - TheWashington Post
Opinion| Yes, people really are turning away from democracy - The WashingtonPost
Opinion| The Founding Fathers feared demagogues and hoped for civic virtue -The Washington Post

I'd be pleased if the Washington Post were just publishing alarming opinions for their own political advantages, but I find logical reasons to share their fears. Respectfully, Supposn
