I sat in another training meeting today. I am glad I did, the subject of this meeting disturbed me deeply. It seems slavery is alive and well in the united states. I started on my career just seven years ago, I always hoped never to be one of third jaded police officers that never shows humanity to the people I deal with. So far I have not.

I am disgusted with myself for not realizing this terrible injustice. I am disgusted that it continues, that slavery is a bigger business now than it was pre civil war. I have a link with statistics I will post when I am able. But the low estimate of slaves in the USA currently is 21 million. over half are citizens, many are children, some of them in the commercial sex industry. Pre civil war there was a ban on international slave trade in that time 11 millom slaves were here. So it has nearly doubled. Slaves are mostly used in labor, not commercial sex.

I guarantee you have seen it in your neighborhood. Kids that come to your door selling magazines are likely slaves. Doing commerce with them is illegal, but these kids are run aways or orphans or their parents sold them.

This is a disgusting fact about my country, I wish to raise awareness that is the only way to stop it. I will link a fact page soon

CNN has an entire blog dedicated to raising awareness.

And as a correction, only about 900,000 people are slaves in America. The 21 million is the global slave population.

Excuse me, you are correct.
Still suckes but 21 million slaves is more then the illegal population. We'd be talking about very different issues during this election if the slave population was that large.

I just wonder sometimes how they come up with the numbers i bet it could be a lot bigger than 21 million global.
Slaves are pretty obvious, most nations don't enforce anti-slavery laws and most that do are willing to look the other way so long as the slaves aren't being mistreated or doing dangerous work (think crop pickers or shepherds). Makes it pretty easy to do a head count.

As I understand it, the market price for a slave in the US is $90. They're used mostly as maids and farmhands (though globally prostitution is the top industry).

Yeah prostitution is massive and i guess always will be, to some its very easy money, to others its a way of living.
You might be surprised how many slaves you've met (if only in passing) at hotels or driving past farms if the DoL hadn't done an inspection in the previous year. 900k, it's crazy.

This is assuming you've traveled in the US.

No sorry not travelled to the US though im in the UK and im sure it isn't much different here either.
In real numbers we have you beat but with all the economic and political refugees you have, I wouldn't be surprised if the slave population was bigger by percentage. It's so easy to fight in nations where anti-slavery laws are enforced but nobody wants to talk about it, so it gets swept under the rug until human rights abuses become too obvious. Happens in Florida once every year or so but once the overseers are thrown in prison and their business are shut down (usually a farm or service business) people forget about it until the next outrage that can't be ignored.

Slavery is the most demeaning this ever. I hate the idea so much. I don't know how someone would need to be raised in order to believe that slavery is morally right.

Sadly I never knew how much human trafficking still occurred in modern times until i started researching marijuana prohibition. Most of the evil pricks that treat humans like a commodity also deal in the trade of drugs and weapons. In fact marijuana makes up 60% of the drug cartels income. If we were to legalize marijuana we could face priorities towards human trafficking.

Spain recently dismantled a human trafficking scheme to europe for use in the sex trade. Most were Brazilians but also people from various countries were always victims with promises of jobs but were actually deceived and enslaved, and I know that the police and corrupt government here knew.

And more sad to know that it occurs worldwide.
