Just been reading about this....

Cleveland's police union will not be holding the American flag for a pregame ceremony for the Brown's first game Sept. 10, Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association President Steve Loomis said late Friday.

ā€œI am not going to participate or work with management that allows their players to disrespect the flag and the national anthem,ā€ Loomis said.

Kaepernick's protest was originally in response to multiple incidents involving police shooting unarmed black men. The protests re-emerged following violent white supremacist demonstrations in Charlotesville, Virginia.

I guess a few people are a wee bit pissed off with the politicisation of Sport? Is this something that's gaining traction in the US?

The primary reaction from what I can tell is a form of boycott in that many Americans simply avoid anything to do with this team in hopes it bankrupts the owners into ditching the offending players. It certainly worked with the initiator who was not picked up by any team during the draft and probably seriously regrets his actions while he pawns his cleats.

These guys make millions because our country lets them for "Playing" and then have the nerve to disrespect it.

They should be disciplined.
from the coach of Kaepenick...
Niners coach Chip Kelly told reporters Saturday that Kaepernick's decision not to stand during the national anthem is "his right as a citizen" and said "it's not my right to tell him not to do something."

... and the NFL...
The NFL also released a statement, obtained by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport: "Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem."
I guess the organisation doesn't give a crap about it so long as the cash keeps rollin in.....and now a quick message from our sponsors....

More likely they must follow the Constitutional rights granted to all citizens. The member teams however also have rights which is why lil' Kappy no longer has a job because no one wanted him.

They made the wise decision to avoid him in order to avoid fans avoiding THEM.

True.... but what of the Browns guys though? Kappy as you say was pretty well knackered after surgery but these guys are not in that situation. Wonder if there will be fan protests if it carries on...

What the players think of the fans is not important, what the fans think of the players IS. What the owners think might matter but not as much as money.

when you are on the job, you don't have the "right" to protest. Most jobs are that way. If I had a politically correct whipped boss he might let me, but he shouldn't.

In any sensible country, these totalitarian, money-corrupted mass sporting events would be outlawed.
