Thousands of Russians took to the streets of Moscow and other cities to express their discontent for Putin and the current election, which is believed to have been rigged by Putin's United Russia party in his favor. Protesters are calling for an end to Putin's rule in the biggest opposition protest since he came to power 12 years ago.

If Putin goes, the Communists come back to power. With 80% of Russians pro-USSR and with several breakaway states wishing to join the Union-State, it could mean a return to the old soviet system (as the Union-State, I doubt they'd bother restoring the USSR).

Having not looked into Putin's eyes and seen his soul, I think he is dangerous. I think he is no friend to the US. He is the kind to keep blaming the US for everything to keep the heat off him. We know where he came from and what his job was.

The man is a post-Stalin Soviet (which is to say just as bad as a Stalinist but not a communist/socialist) to the core. The man thinks He's Peter the Great reincarnated and that Stalin was the best ruler Russia ever had, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin can't be trusted by any democrat/republican or even most authoritarians. :p

You have a problem with the return of the Soviet Union? Why?

Medvedev has denied the allegations of fraud in the election. Putin, who became prime minister in 1999 and was elected president in 2000, has accused the United States of encouraging and financing the protesters.
Absolute, guaranteed TRUTH!

Putin, a Stalinist? *ROTFLMAO* ****ing Americans and their propaganda.

Putin is credited with bringing political stability. He has been credited with restoring the territorial integrity of Russia via the Second Chechen War. During Putin's presidency, the Russian economy grew for nine straight years, seeing GDP increase by 72% in PPP (sixfold in nominal), poverty decrease by more than 50%, and average monthly salaries increase from $80 to $640. These achievements were ascribed to strong macroeconomic management, important fiscal policy reforms and a confluence of high oil prices, surging capital inflows and access to low-cost external financing, and were described as impressive by analysts.

During his presidency, Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. He put much effort into development of the energy policy of Russia, affirming Russia's position as an energy superpower. This included the renaissance of the nuclear industry in the country and the initiation of construction of several major export pipelines, including ESPO and Nord Stream, among other megaprojects in Russia.

While many reforms and actions made during the Putin presidency have been criticized by Western observers and domestic opposition as undemocratic, Putin's overseeing of the return of order, stability, and progress has won him widespread popularity in some sections of Russian society. Putin often supports a tough guy image in the media, demonstrating his physical capabilities and taking part in unusual or dangerous acts, such as extreme sports and interaction with wild animals. A judoka and samboist, several times Champion of Leningrad in his youth, Putin has played a major role in development of sport in Russia, notably, helping the city of Sochi to win the bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Aside from the fact that there is no consensus on Russia between the citizens of the United States (just as there is virtually no other consensus on anything of this nature from any large population), why the hell are you looking to Americans if we are such liars? Why don't you look at the facts or whatever news you like? Or in your case, probably propaganda.

I recall KAL007. The USA claimed the Soviets simply swooped in, shot the ****er down and left it at that. The Americans even played a tape which claimed to show the Soviets firing at the KAL plane for no reason. Interesting they never included the entire tape, which CLEARLY shows the Soviets telling the KAL plane over and over and over again to leave their airspace, which is why many believe the plane had American spy equipment aboard. Why did you Americans lie, and paint the Soviets as evil?

Wait, why would you want the Communist Party back in power?
With the Communists, we knew who our enemy was. The fragmented former Soviet Empire is a mess. Nukes everywhere. Enemies in the former states ready to cut the West's throat over something as dumb as religion. Under Soviet rule, there was order. Now, there is chaos. One could deal with the Soviets, not the mess you see today. Also, the uselessness of communism would ensure that the Soviets never become efficient, and thus dangerous.

The Soviet Union was more efficient then modern Russia and until they got into an arms race with the US the were doing better then the US.

The Soviet Union? Efficient? Bwaaaahhhhhaaaaaaaaa! You DO realise it is because of their own inefficiencies is why they collapsed, yes? It is not through efficiency they were doing better than the USA in the arms race. It is because they were SPENDING MORE MONEY than the USA. They were spending more than all of NATO combined. That, and the inherent inefficiencies of the Soviet bureaucracy is why the Soviet Union collapsed.

I do find the arrogance of you Americans amusing, especially when you claim the Soviet Union was in an arms race with the USA, which they were not. They were in an arms race with all of NATO, and in effect, the entire WORLD. The very reason for the existence of the Soviet Union was world communism, no matter the cost. The Soviets had long passed the USA when it came to arms, therefore there was no race with you.
