Shooting in England

A taxi driver gone mad had a shooting spree with a sniper rifle in England. Guess that makes sense, if any professional is likely to snap, it would probably be taxi drivers - as they are under a hell of a lot of stress and the public treats them like poop.

Still, its very sad though.

It is always unfortunate when something like this happens, but when one becomes unstable, almost anything becomes possible.

Possibly true, but I am sure he wouldn't have been able to kill as many people if there were better gun control laws in England. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize a psycho can do a hell of a lot more damage with a shotgun than he can with a steak knife.

This is why the NRA are a detestable lot, they don't understand this and wish to keep their guns knowing full well that people will die as a result.

I'm interested in seeing if there is a copy cat, just like the slayings over in China. These are harsh times people are living in and just one small trigger point can set off quite a catastrophe.

I didn't realize I was detestable,

While it is debatable, gun control isn't the answer, criminals will always be able to get them, and there will be the occasional person who is law abiding lose there mind and go on a killing spree.

Harsher penalties for doing a crime with a gun is the answer IMO.

I personally feel everyone who does not have a criminal record should be allowed to carry a gun, concealed or not. It would make it more difficult for "stuff" to happen if there are a bunch of people packing.

And I know people who are anti gun can come up with an argument to counter my statements, but so long as they exist, they are a fact of life. And the idea of melting them all down is a bad one, as I know there are some very good machinists in this world that can make them from scratch in their garage.

Clearly Calvin has taken note of the gun ban that was repealed in DC and the current effects of the gun ban in Chicago. Criminals are going to be able to get guns, so, yeah, that seems intelligent to make all the innocent people not be able to defend themselves. What you're proposing is a world in which guns were never created, once they are around you can't just get rid of them all.

That's because you and your gun toting hill billy buddies don't see yourself in real life, rather through rose flowered glasses. Your argument that if everyone is packing less fights/squirmishes/crime would happen is ridiculous. What would happen is more people would say to themselves "Hey, I have a gun. Gun = Power. I can therefore do whatever I want, including illegal stuff." And so, the law abiding citizen becomes a common criminal thanks to poor/lax gun control laws.

Way to ignore that American cities are some of the safest in the world. You know why? Because if we get mugged, we blow the muggers head off while in places like the UK, any victim that fights back is liable to get stuck like a pig and that's assuming the mugger isn't packing.

Indeed, states with 'Castle Doctrine' laws are some of the safest.

The statistics support our position. Mind you I'm likely further left then most Europeans, so don't think I'm some hill billy. Take guns from the people and only criminals and the gov't have them. History has shown how bad that always turns out.

As for you point in our last post, how much strongerthen a ban on guns can the UK's gun control laws be?

Yes, but gun crime in the UK is lower than in the USA, although one must account for the greater population in the USA. I suppose cultural beliefs also factor into this, making it difficult to say one way of doing things is clearly the best for all places in the world.

ps - Sorry for calling you a hill billy.

Would you care to explain how stripping away any reasonable defense I may have against a violent criminal ( a gun ) makes you safer?

I would like you to move down near the border of Mexico and the US, and then let us know how you feel not having a gun while the drug cartels of Mexico run the streets. Guns are already in existence, if I don't have it, someone else will. That's like trying to ban drugs, it may be illegal, but people still do it. Take a look at any of the instances of complete Gun Bans in the US and let me know how that has worked out for those cities. Arm the criminals so that the regular citizens can't do shit. Oh, our cops as well. I'm sure those bank robbers would love that.

Name a full year America has gone without being at war with someone. Look at all the times we've been invaded. Look at how we came to be. Look at all our civil wars (some worse then others). I think you'll get to know why we feel a need for guns. We actually have to use them so often and crime rates have nothing to do with it.

Because after subdueing the violent criminal, you then still have a gun which may be used for nefarious purposes against moi!

In answer to your first question, the USA is at war with someone probably more than any other nation on earth.

To my knowledge the USA hasn't been invaded since the Brits/Canada set fire to the White House in the 1800's. Or did the people who wrote the history books you read in school leave that little detail out?

I think you can debate we're constantly invaded by Mexican drug cartels daily, not to mention I would say terrorists have invaded the US as well.

You seem to have missed a minor war known as WW2. ;) They made it as far as Alaska (the bloodiest battle of the war was fought to librate Occupied Alaska) before we turned them back.
