Both sides are beating war drums and rumor has it that Little Kim is dead (which would explain the sudden insanity).

Have not heard any claims that Kim Jong ill's son is dead so I cannot comment on that. I would have to agree that this is just a show of force. I do not believe South Korea will strike back to this unless North Korea continues to attack.

Little Kim refers to Jong ill (he's short). If true that would mean a power struggle between his youngest son and the military, thus explaining the sudden disregard of diplomatic protocol as both sides try to make themselves look like strong leaders.

The last I heard Kim Jong ill was preparing to step down and leave his legacy to his son, if this is true, the move to strike South Korea could be veiwed as a show of the new leader's power to South Korea and the world, to establish himself.

We sent the George Washington carrier group yesterday morning (or this - can't get it right w/the date line and whatnot).

China stands to lose if NK invades. NK stands to lose if they invade. Here's how.

We have about 25,000 troops in SK. They are hostages. If KJI takes Seoul and our troops we are obligated to respond. We can decimate their forces in very short order. The issue will be degree of American restraint not whether or not we can produce a horrific slaughter of NKoreans. For my patr I suspect we'd hit hard and fast on their air defenses and then have a couple "show" battles where we demonstreate just how quickly we can destroy them and wait for the military (all million plus) to arrest KJI and sue for peace. So, KJI loses his kingdom if he invades.

China... think they'll go to war with their largerst customer to support KJI? Me either. China likes KJI being as pain in the ass for us. They don't want them going too far though. The attacks on the frigate and shelling the island may have more to do with NK's relationship w/China. KJI is crazier than a shithouse rat though so who knows.

I got that from CNN and Al Jazeera (which I've found to be quite a good source actually). I think the Biggest is the USS Gorge Washington (a carrier).

The Geo. Washington battle group was under steam the following morning to conduct joint exercises w/the SK Navy. China has no blue water navy to speak of. The biggest boat in an battle group will be the carrier. Supporting vessels operate to keep the carrier safe while it operates as a forward projection of force. A carrier battle group, in terms of fire power, is a more significant force than those of most countries and even more then most contries' combined military force. We maintain 11 groups.
