Gov?t Paid More Than $600 Million in Benefits to Dead People

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The federal government has doled out more than $600 million in benefit payments to dead people over the past five years, a watchdog report says.

Such payments are meant for retired or disabled federal workers, but sometimes the checks keep going out even after the former employees pass away and the deaths are not reported, according to the report this week from the Office of Personnel Management?s inspector general, Patrick McFarland.

In one case, the son of a beneficiary continued receiving payments for 37 years after his father?s death in 1971. The payments ? totaling more than $515,000 ? were only discovered when the son died in 2008.

The government has been aware of the problem since a 2005 inspector general?s report revealed defects in the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund. Yet the improper payments have continued, despite more than a half dozen attempts to develop a system that can figure out which beneficiaries are still alive and which are dead, the report said.

?It is time to stop, once and for all, this waste of taxpayer money,? it said.

Obama and the Federalies want to steal from the rich and give it to dead people....like the unions....like many government jobs.....

Absolutely agreed. Sarkozy too. If action is not taken on the half of the most powerful countries in the EU, the Eurozone is going to suffer a lot. This is not just a matter for Greece. This isn't even just a matter for Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. If nothing is done, it will have severe consequences for everyone within the Schengen Zone and for the Euro itself. There is a responsibility there. You can extend the argument to half of her domestic policies too. Intent on playing politics, rather than making progress. Also, the handling of the E.Choli thing was ridiculous. The Spanish Government was very rightfully angry.

Yes, however, Whenever the American left are in power and their economic policies of socialism (papered over with a capitalistic veneer) fails, it is as certain as the change in the seasons that they will claim that the cause of the failure is that the so-called rich do not pay their undefined "fair" share in taxes. Thus they will push for higher rates in the inane belief that by raising the rates, the revenue to the government will grow by an equal percentage, as they attempt to rally the populace into a unified anger over the need to punish a perceived foe.

Well from what I've heard recently there talking about a new world currency and changing to that instead of using US dollar in trade and exports but I think there trying to still work out the new plan for that.

However, an increase of the EU Bailout fund was approved by the Bundestag just yesterday - it's not enough, but there is hope. Germany has to be careful, or it could bring down half the EU with it. If it wants to keep reaping the economic rewards, it will need to contribute.

It is not feasible and Germany is starting to realize it. The bailouts just kick the can down the road for a system that has fundamental problems as it currently stands. A return to confidence fixes things for only so long until this happens again.

I agree that I do not believe Germany will leave, but the EU will change in the next decade or two drastically. Some countries probably will leave- we could potentially see an EU only with the major western nations.

Oh and the bailouts are more because of French and German bank exposure to Greek and PIIGS debt (as well as worries about the currency), not so much for the Euro dream. They are not actually in the interest of the Greek people as they weren't in the interest of the Irish people and probably won't be in the interest of the Portuguese people when their time comes.
