Waste of Precious Time

I saw an ad by IBM that says: "Last year, Americans spent 4.2 billion hours sitting in traffic."

What a waste of precious time!

How can we resolve this dilemma?

Having a really good public transportation system might help a lot. That would potentially get some of the cars off of the road. Otherwise, we just have to hope for the Maglevs.

Flying cars might be a good theory. Okay seriously, I'm not quite sure how we can solve traffic problems. I mean you can't very well do something on a computer as you don't know when traffic will move again. I guess i really shouldn't have responded to this since I didn't have anything to add :( I'm sorry!

Flying cars would be awesome but in the meantime if people utilized public transportation and carpooled more it would help a lot. They really should be promoting bus services more aggressively.

Hmm.. really thats too much, they need to setup a fast and reliable transportation system. so that they can save their time. they are so good in every field and should also concentrate on their transportation system. :)

You should look into a man who is not known by the masses. Jacque Fresco.
He has all the worlds problems solved today, if only people would wake up and see it is through following people like him we will change the world. He has a really great dvd out I recommend you all check out, Future By Design.
It is truly amazing and it will change your views on not only public transport, including cutting shipping time and flying time down, but also many other things in this world, just be ready to listen to a genius!

I'm seriously just going to move to an island somewhere with a low population and have my internet coming from a nearby country like New Zealand. Hmm, that will be the life when it actually happens. I despise traffic and the go go go mentality of those living in large cities.

I feel the same way about traffic. It's amazing how nice it is to not have to worry about it. I can walk to just about anywhere I want to go at college, and it's been ridiculously nice. I'm going to miss that a bit over the summer.

I also should have made a bet about how long it would take for the Venus project to rear its ugly head (It's what Kingdogol is talking about). That's actually why I threw in the Maglev reference.

Yeah man the Mag lev will be awesome, though why is the Venus Projects head an ugly one? Do you not agree with what they are trying to accomplish? I mean just imagine a world with proper technology, strike that, real technology! Cities designed before they are just rapidly thrown together, I can't wait.

The problem with the Venus project is that it is just a pipe dream for a utopia that will never happen. Scientists today have all the incentive in the world to make that technology happen. Anyone of them would become a millionaire if they perfected a robot worker to do any job.

The Venus Project is just a modified utopia that blames big business for our technological shortcomings.

Have you actualy seen the 'full'
Future By Design
?
The Venus Project blames no one and simply offers alternatives for our miserable world. No more homelessness, suffering, money, politics, accidents, suppression, lies, profits, advertising, coruption etc. I highly recommend you watch it mate! It will truly change you first look impression at it, I mean I also make mistakes and judge things too quickly and then hate admitting it, but seriously check it out, I gurantee if nothing else, you will see a different future for us all with the technology that is already available today.

Wow, I had never heard of the venus project until now. I'm looking through the website and it all seems very futuristic. It would be amazing if this actually goes through. Who is it funded by though? It all seems a little surreal. Reminds me of Bioshock if you've ever played that for xbox 360.

It can't be funded by anyone. They are all for a "resource based economy." :).

It isn't funded by anyone. The guy in charge and a few followers are trying to build a commune in New Zealand. This is all that they've managed after roughly 40 years.

The basic idea is that we could magically eliminate all of our problems by eliminating money and using robots for everything. It's Marxism with robots.

The main argument is that we don't have amazing technology because the evil corporations have planned obsolescence schemes and that the limitations of money are preventing the cool stuff from happening. His answer is that if we get rid of money and just let people do what they want, then everything will be fine and we'll have Cross-Atlantic Maglev trains. They fail to realize that money just represents the cost of resources.

Kingdogol - Please offer specifics of how this could possibly work. I'm not watching a 3 hour movie (or using a torrent on campus) during finals week when I already know the basic tenets of it.

Obviously public transportation could help a lot, but wonder whether additional and more efficient fly-overs could help in the long run, especially now that people need to spend money :) For example in Dubai in the Middle East they had serious road congestion because of a major growth in the city, virtually bursting at its seams, and too many cars for the roads available. Quite a lot of relief has come from added fly-overs and working on roads that provide short-cuts to destinations.

I thought they will improve Mars to sustain life.

On the topic, here in Manila, PH, there are lots of traffic especially on rush hours. To decrease the number of private vehicles traveling, the government suggest people to use public vehicles especially MRT (Metro Rail Transit), electric railways. It has two advantages: save money from gasoline and fare.

I wish that they could improve public transport, but it's just too late. We're already to packed into the cities and two spread out in the suburbs. It would be a real nightmare to really work out a good path for a subway or bus system.

Public transportation would be great but hard here in America. While it is very heavily used in the big cities, traffic jams are still huge. The problem is with everybody wanting to live in suburbia but working in the city. Flying cars would be great but lets be realistic, mass flying cards are probably at LEAST 5+ decades away.

well it shows the loss of time that has occured in the previous year....so according to me some good transportation is desperately required to get rid off the traffic problem....

I see that most people there have private vehicles. And the only public vehicles there are buses and trains. that's why US have the highest usage of gas products.

They can make a solution to this but it will take years to finish.

Can you imagine how many accidents there would be with flying cars... people zipping around all over the place. I think what is more likely is something similar to what you see in iRobot - cars that drive themselves at a locked speed etc. I mean, they've already developed cars that can parallel park themselves.

I think we're likely to see mass production of self-driving cars sooner than we will see flying cars.
