It is really sad that his last days had to be so disappointing for him.Truly a sad loss. May he rest in peace.

Hey, I need a new body too! Sooner the better. Wish I had taken better care of the old one. I just never considered I would be around this long. For those who are born death is certain. (Verifiable)
For those who are dead, rebirth is certain. (Not verifiable though)
Therefore, there is nothing to feel sad.
He used his body for 85 years. Now he needs a new body.

It is sad that someone who did so much to develop countless young men's integrity and character, showed that when needed the most.........his was lacking.
.
Baloney, he notified whom he thought he had to notify. Turns out he was wrong, but that doesn't show he was involved in some sort of cover-up.
Some people just can't get past "live and die for good old____--------(insert school here). We have a lot of that right here for the University of Kentucky. People get real mad if anything interferes with our Basketball Team.I never said he was involved in the cover-up.
My point was that although he notified his superiors, he deliberately let it drop and put it out of his mind.
I personally don't know too many people that would have a clear conscience, by doing the absolute bare minimum... and then not following up.
Especially if you're a parent.
THAT is a lack of integrity and character IMHO.
As I also stated, he was a role model and helped to develop hundreds (if not thousands) of young men in a positive manner.
I will always believe that his first instinct was to protect the institution...instead of the unknown victim.
And that is just a travesty.

Like you're a mind-reader. He was an important university official who had to worry about his job. He reported it higher-ups, with the reasonable assumption that they would do whatever was necessary.
And it was a shame that his life ended on such a sour note.I was hoping to avoid the sexual abuse scandal in a thread about the passing of a great and tremendous man, but since Gandy started it... *grin*
I agree with Gandy. What Paterno did was not nearly enough. Perhaps from a legal standpoint, but certainly not from a moral one.
Yes, Paterno reported the incident to the school. However, once he saw that nothing was done about it and the man was still on school property with more reports of abuse coming forth, he should have gone to the authorities. Not legally, but morally.
If it were I, there is absolutely no question at all I would have gone to the authorities if I knew a man was sexually molesting children and nothing was done about it.
However, this in no way tarnishes Paterno's image in my mind. He was an extraordinary man who did so much for so many. The type of man that would give the shirt off his back if you were in need. He went out of his way to always do the right thing.
Unfortunately, in this one isolated case, he dropped the ball.

But he's supposed to drop everything he's paid to do, talk to everyone possible, vist government agencies, make phone calls and emails, keep a spread sheet ..............

It takes about five minutes to call the police and report a possible crime.
No spread sheets, emails or visits to government agencies needed.
He didn't witness a crime. All he knew was hearsay. If it were false, he could have been sued. He did the right thing.
