Navy names USS Gabrielle Giffords

I believe this is something both Republicans and Democrats can agree on and find common ground.

I do not care which side of the political aisle you are on---Mrs. Giffords is an inspiration to us all.

The secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.

Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.

“The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her,” said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.

Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, Mark Kelly, as well as former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed in the shooting in Tucson, Ariz., last year.

Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navy’s 10th LCS.

Mabus said the ship would stay in the Navy fleet for three decades.
“It’s very appropriate that the LCS-10 be named for someone who has become synonymous with courage, who has inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency,” Mabus said.

Did you serve in the military, DodgeFB?
No, they turned me down. I made it all the way to 1A in the draft. Then since I had polio at 19 months old they kind of give me the bums rush.

My dad retired from the Navy. So I grew up around navel bases. I had a military picture ID before I was in 1st grade.

I lost 3 good friends in Vietnam. One of them had his physical same time I did. I thought that could have been me.

Sorry to hear, sir. I know that must have stuck with you for some time.

I was lucky. I got a pass due to attending college.

At least you did not run. My daddy cried when J. Carter brought the ones home that went to Canada and helped them find work. But he did not do a lot for the ones that fought.

Ummmm, I was looking for more specifics as to your statement
......... and helped them find work. But he did not do a lot for the ones that fought.
Understood that he finished the amnesty that Ford conditionally started for some draft dodgers, but you made it sound like there were special privileges given to the ones Carter pardoned.

Which, I totally agreed with at the time...and even more so now.

Just as I also agreed with the pardon of Nixon by Ford.

At some point, you have to get past the division and move on.

Well back in those days people were not saving links to every speech Carter made. I do know what he said in a speech on TV. He was calling for everyone to "welcome the ones from Canada back home. Do you remember how our soldiers were welcomed home back then? He made more effort for the ones that ran than the ones that fought.

As for Carter, I will never "move on". He in my heart is the worst president in history in so many ways. And he continues to stick his bill in even now. He will not let me move on. He criticized the US from Cuba.

"Former US president Jimmy Carter - on a visit to Cuba - has criticised US policy towards the island.

He has done the same thing with North Korea which I don't feel is helpful to any sitting president. When they leave they should shut up unless they are asked of an opinion.

The draft ended the year before I graduated high school, so I very much remember those times.

I'm an Air Force brat and my Dad was over there in 65/66 with a Red Horse squadron....... building bases in the middle of the jungle.

We're all entitled to our opinions on who was the best/worst, but how can anyone put Nixon ahead of Carter?

For all of Carter's political failings, I think he is a decent human being...... and that's something I respect over almost everything else.

Nixon.......not so much.

Carter may very well be a better person, that is debatable. But it does not make him a better president than Nixion.

When Carter was in I bought a new truck, 19%. And that was bank rate.

And I paid 13% for a house.

How exactly was that Carter's fault though?

I believe Carter takes far more heat than he deserves. On a scale of 1-10, I give him a 6.

I certainly believe he was a far better President than Nixon. Nixon was a complete and utter failure to me.

Well you know how I feel already. But Nixon did not spend years kissing up to our enemies and criticizing the US from foreign soil. The voters showed their opinion of Carter and sent him home. But he just refuses to go away. He loves to spew his opinions on what the current president is doing. I do not want "any" x president doing that. Not even to Obama. We have one president at a time. And only one should have his face on what we are doing at any given time.

But I guess that is just me.
