Viva La Revolucion!

In Greece, there have been violent protests in Greece continuously since March.

On one side, there is the anti-authoritarian left, in union with much of the working class and some of the middle class.

On the other side, there is the police, backed up by Golden Dawn - a group of neo-nazis. There is open cooperation between these two forces. There have been many occasions of Golden Dawn members throwing (poorly made) Molotov Cocktails at protesters. This often results into a breakout of violence.

The Government is going to extraordinary lengths to keep the word off the street. This includes examples of naval forces turning ships away at a three-mile distance from Athens.

What is incredible about all of this, is that there has been next to NO mainstream media coverage of this whatsoever. It's been "a bunch of anarchists are protesting" and rubbish like that.

In reality, it is a nation teetering on the edge of revolution. Yet we see a pathetic response from the mainstream media. If any.

Why is the media censoring this information? And who is controlling the media on this occasion? And so well that all the evidence is a few youtube videos, a prison-planet article and the rest in anarchist newsletters? Where is CNN? Where is Fox? Where is the BBC?

Also, will the announced upcoming elections have any effect on the rioting?

Dirk, are you spamming us with "revolution" celebrations? I would not celebrate any revolution in Greece. They have had too many of them with very little result. When last did it have a good Government, and who is to say that a good one is possible?

Of course i'm not!

I don't think that any revolution will occur. Not now, anyway. I don't know why, i'm just pessimistic like that. But i feel that the police are too strong, and that the riots are not well-organised enough or using adequate tactics to be a proper revolution.

The point of it was more that the mainstream media are simply not reporting any of this. Even though it's on the edge of all-out (albeit disorganised) class war and even though militant neo-nazis are involved - and institutionally supported!

As a side note, i think the mere existence of a Government excludes it from the possibility of being a good one. :p

I agree with that, also Government is corrupt. Maybe it is all the olives? Or maybe they do need a revolution? :D

Someone once asked me, if revolution was inevitable, along my personal ideals, which country would go first?

I figured:

France seems quite happy with highly regulated capitalism...
Italy is too theological...
The Netherlands are too laid back...
In Britain, you can't get rid of the damned monarchy without a fuss...
The US is not sociologically developed enough...
Russia is too much in the grip of the mafia...
Germany is too socially integrated with the state...

And that Greece or Spain would be possibly the first to go. Spain has a history of libertarian socialism and Greece has a strong libertarian socialist movement and the public are always ready to pick up arms against the Government.

I actually have been following it (a friend of mine gave me a 'What are you talking about?' look when I brought it up a few weeks ago :p) and I'm frankly surprised nothing big has happened.

Why?

They have a disorganised-revolution-destined-to-failure (alternatively, extended summer of rage) just about every year. What's changed?

I don't know, it's just a similar situation happened here in the '60s (admittedly before my time) and the 'unorganized' Left nearly did take over... Until they were utterly crushed thus ending the Hippy, Militant Left and Religious Left movements in America. :p

I do see the Religious Left starting to make a comeback, however. A reaction to the extremist in gov't I suspect.

And as you said, it's being kept hush hush. Can't blame me for not having a clear view of the situation.

There's always the chance for success, i suppose. And of course i fully support the movement. I just hope they learn from their mistakes and start organising and utilising popular support more effectively, along with tactical strategy with the actual aim of removing the incumbent government.

Wow, talk about anarchy? But yes, sounds pretty explosive in Greece. Maybe you are right about Greece and Spain.

I'm still quite incredulous that the Media and Governments are keeping this under wraps so successfully! Although, when you think about our reliance on the mainstream media and the motives Governments would have, i suppose it's to be expected.

True, I had not read about it anywhere nor saw it in the media until this thread. But when I Googled it, I did find it, and did not realize how bad it really was. Sort of an explosion waiting to happen.

Speaking of media suppression, did you hear about Operation Just Cause (Panama) in 1989?
