Chile was hit by a massive earthquake early this morning in a disaster that has taken the lives of 82 and destroyed many buildings and roads. The earthquake has now also led to a tsunami alert for some places on the pacific ocean, including Hawaii, Japan and Russia.

Let's hope nothing worse than what has happened unfolds as the day goes on and hopefully Chile can get back on its feet soon.

Unfortunately the death count has exceeded 700 and it is expected to rise. The earthquake damaged a lot of property and many have resorted to looting as it is the only way to feed their families. This thing was said to be 500 more times powerful than the one that hit Hati but the devastation is no where near what it is in Haiti according to reports I've read.

I did however also get to watch a few videos of live feeds, traffic cams and stuff like that, and you want to talk about crazy! I'm probably 6000 miles away and it was scary to watch how the Earth was shaking down there!

3 things to consider. 1. Haiti is poor with poor infrastructure. 2. It hit the downtown region of a major city. 3. It happened in the middle of a work day when everyone was in downtown.

Wow! This is really sad. 803 people dead, and apparently there were tsunamis as well. Great however that the military seems to be so strong, and that aid is finally getting to the people in Concepcion who need it.

I saw a very informative video that explained - in laymans' terms - why Chile has such frequent and violent earthquakes.

The military, specifically the navy, is shy most of the people that died, died. I wouldn't be hailing them.

I'm curious, what was it called?

I don't quite understand your first question, can you explain please? Is it because they had been negligent in letting the people know about the tsunami? That part is really bad. But at least they did come up with supplies and firm presence, it could have been much worse. Take Haiti for example! I know it was different as it had just about obliterated the equivalent of Santiago in Chile when the earthquake destroyed Port-au-Prince, but it took really very long for relief to get where it was needed. It took relatively shorter in Chile.

Chile had earthquake building codes. Haiti was so poor, such codes would have rendered construction prohibitively expensive.

Right. But Concepcion was completely obliterated nonetheless. Maybe there were different building codes there than in Santiago where all the well to do people in Chile are living.

It was on AJE. I wonder if they have it on the website... I'll check.

EDIT: Yup, here we go. It's very helpful.

P.s. I LOVE AJE :)
Thanks Dirk. Looks like a really good Website. I did not realize that the earthquake in Chile had been 60 times as strong as in Haiti. The part about seismic activity being a known phenomenon I have been aware off, almost similar to Los Angeles. I probably should not say that too loud, since all of these earthquakes going off everywhere. Wonder how nervous the people in Los Angeles must be these days. And everyone checking up on the emergency regulations and supplies.
