Yep, a respect that was earned between the two parts. It's about time the Russians and Chinese tried to earn the same respect, instead of breaking human rights and standing side by side by dangerous and evil regimes around the world.
They do seem to believe in the "fear factor" way of running things at times.

It will come back to haunt them. The Russians experience that during the 90's, maybe the Chinese should do something smart for a change and learn from the Russian mistake.

RoccoR, you wrote that in wars between nations it is about the "maximization of wealth." I believe that is another feature of maintaining power and self determination.

I believe hegemonys are not coming to an end. They are changing form. I agree with you that future wars will be fought on computer screens and with mechanical aids like drones, though soldiers will be needed too.

If the Soviets had won, I believe we would be standing in long lines to buy a limited supply of food as their citizens did.

Kingdom, the United States and the UK fought two wars, the Revolution and the War of 1812. Our relationship is different from many other countries because so many of us came from there. We share a common culture and language. My wife and I lived in the UK for two years, so we have experienced the similarities first hand. Russia and China are different from us.

I agree its time Russian and China learned to adopt some of the respect we and the Brits share, but they don't have to, so they won't. They don't see it as in their interest.

Yes, they believe in the "fear factor" way of running things because it is all they know. The western European traditions are almost unique.

Their way of doing things may come back to haunt them, as you write. Time will tell.
