Arizona Shootings: Pot Not the Problem

In the USA, there is an over-abundance of blame thrown around whenever tragedy strikes. Suicides linked to Marilyn Manson lyrics, manslaughter by mimicking Beavis and Butthead stunts and murder tied into supposed "secret messages" on backwards played Ozzy songs all gave the public their needed scapegoats when trouble arose. This time, marijuana has been linked to a shooting in Arizona that claimed the lives of six, including a 9 year old girl who was ironically born on September 11th, 2001. None of the aforementioned, nor pot, had anything to do with the tragedies that have unfolded in the States over the past two decades. In fact, tragedy strikes without cause or warning across the globe.

Marijuana is a sedative drug in the cannaboid class which has no recorded or proven effects linking to violence or dementia. In the words of Robin Williams, "I ain't never met me an angry pot smoker". Unfortunately, Robin met his match this year because the gunman, Jared Lee Loughner did a huge disservice to the Cannabis Crawl movement by becoming a marijuana smoker. In Jared's case, a clear case of mental illness led to his distorted life view and ultimately his plan to kill and maim innocent people.

I hadn't heard of the marijuana link until now, but if that is being discussed people need to remember that correlation does not prove causation- it never has, and it never can.

No, but a correlation gives us reason to consider the matter further

when a critical mass of correlating facts is reached we may conclude that they are, in fact, causation

Weed is a sedative, the guy went on an insanity driven anti-gov't rampage. Sedated people don't go on rampages.

they may when the sedatives wear off

from what we're hearing dude had abnormal brain chemistry and who knows what weed'll do to it

though... I doubt there will be little disagreement here that blaming weed is dumber than a sack full of hammers

Do we know for sure that his weed was not "spiced" up a bite. I hear some of the weed fans around here like to put "additives" in their weed. Even animal tranquilizers.

I highly doubt a "critical mass" will be found in this case considering studies on marijuana over the years that show no such tendencies. If it was laced with something else as Dodge suggested, then that's another story, but it has nothing to do with the marijuana- it either means he laced it himself and the other drug might have led to what happened or the drug cartels did it and that just comes back to the legalization for safety argument.

I think you're talking about K or Special K. Ketamine. If he's smoking that he isn't moving very far very fast.

If he's using fry (embalming fluid) or pcp that may chnage things a bit but still... dope didn't tell him to kill those people.

I was speaking to the notion of correlation / causation not the specific facts here

If he's smoking Mexican cartel weed he's smoking about the crappiest weed anyone can get away with selling

In no way do I think drugs (of any kind) can be reasonably blamed here

there are occassions where people freak out and do horrible things... however, this issue has been going on over a period of time which denies that "really high stupid act" notion
