Atheism becoming more prevalent

Atheism seems to be becoming more prevalent and definitely atheists are becoming more outspoken. What do you think set this off? Where was the turning point? The science has been around for decades, but it's only lately that we are seeing quite a big push for freethinking and atheistic or at least agnostic viewpoints. Many books are being published (e.g. The God Delusion, god Is Not Great, etc.) and now we have the billboards going up.

I wasn't really that focused on religion at all a few years ago, so I'm not sure what the turning point was, but it seemed rather abrupt.

Any thoughts?

I think we have the creationists and the religious right to thank. They made a lot of atheists realize what was at stake. Nothing like a common enemy to unite a group.

All of the religious battles occurring around us (intelligent design, creationism, some aspects of abortion, etc.) have forced atheists to become more vocal.

There is also an interesting change in attitudes toward religion. Most of the moderate churchgoers seem to be getting more and more disillusioned with their faith. The push for atheism is partly possible due to the growing collapse of organized religion. More and more people are seeing that they can live without gods.

Very true! I guess now that you mention it, I remember hearing a lot about these battles on the news and such. Gay marriage, intelligent design in science class etc. were/are huge topics. I guess you can only push people so far before they start to push back. It's actually pretty funny really - quite ironic.

I thinkk some religions have taken some ridiculous positions, which tends to disillusion people. I also think that people are more aware that there are multiple religions each claiming to be the one true faith, and that they can't all be right, so maybe none of them are.

As far as being more outspoken, in spite of the emphasis on faith that we hear in campaigns, it isn't so important any more. And as we teach people to be more tolerant of others, atheists get included.

Good for you, given that stats are showing that the less religion in a country, the more peaceful and law abiding it is.

Contrast that with the U.S. religious Christian nation, who has the worst jail and abortion stats in the world.

The sooner all god religions die out, the better for all of us.

If you are wrong, you have wasted your whole life adoring a genocidal, homophobic and misogynous god and his vile religion.

Do you think Hitler is a saint in heaven? He and god are close in character.

It has been fermenting for years.

I started talking of the turning point about 10 years ago.

It seems that we are educating ourselves out of supernatural and other stupid ways of thinking.

The gay and feminist movements pushed the good to show themselves against the evil mainstream religions..

Religions longest suffering victims.

Strange that it took the weakest and most oppressed of us to show the stronger how justice works.

As we speak, those vile religions are preaching for homophobias and misogyny, against the law of the land.

My though is that they are traitors to their countries.

Religion oppresses far more than gays....women being the most attacked but they go after each other as well. The way Christians do not believe other Christians are Christian makes me wonder if there are any Christians besides the One at a time.

By the end of this century I anticipate religion fading away in western society and scientific fact becoming the guiding factor in society. Barring some new quantum theory or multiverse verification the belief in supernatural creation of reality seems doomed.

The old adage may hold some truth, --- that the only good Christian is a Gnostic Christian.

If Christianity had not changed the Chrestian Jesus when they consolidated it into Christianity, it would be a moral religion. Constantine really screwed it when he bought it.

If it were not for atheists and free thinkers, the secular world would not have evolved.

If atheists get off their back sides and start up more atheist churches, what you want to happen will happen.

Atheists control how fast religions die out.

Atheism cannot have churches as it is not belief but disbelief. Atheists like Christians differ with every one.
