The reconstruction period ,immediately after the civil war , was a period of abject horror for the disenfranchised citizens of the Old South . Only when the former rebel states were readmitted did some semblance of law and order emerge.
The experience of being subjected to violence and rape and mayhem at the hands of Blacks ,,left the Southerners in a state of fear and trepidation of the horrors and violence they experienced ;and the possibility that they would reoccur , led to the enacting of Jim crow laws . The South ,understandably, became racially segregated.
But not happy to leave it there, as soon as movies became popular ,they reinforced their anti black feelings by flocking to see the pro klan movie entitled: BIRTH OF A NATION" and other films were produced typically showing Blacks as stupid ,barbaric , and violence prone people.
This was not to last ,and other producers tried to capitalize on the negative and the genuine curiosity Whites had about Black race people ;and so a new film industry was created bringing a racial genre to the people both north and south.
Blacks started to evolved into affable , harmless, helpful types but still mindless brutes ,not to be trusted.
Throughout the early part of the 20 cent. this is what movie goers were to see;until Amos n Andy came along and became an instant hit with white viewers.
Still Blacks were seen as curiosities ;but the humor was tremendous and eventually was carried over into film and television.
The media moguls and hollywood controllers ,seeing the great chance of making a financial killing decided to take things one step further by showing Blacks in positive roles on television and film.
The bottom line is that the American people still have yet to see Blacks as they truly are and not how movie producers and those who control the media want you to see them as.
