I would hope the US would decline such an offer.:unsure:I was wondering, assuming there was an active moment to do so, hat do you think the odds would be of the US joining and what effect do you think it ould have on the Commonwealth?
I would hope the US would decline such an offer.
It would just be another version of the European Union. And just watch the news to see what a mess that is. And the world is tired of the US calling the shots. Why? It'd give us a way of directly moving against the Chinese in Africa and an American is about to end up on the British thrown anyway (oh the irony :giggle. We'd have a real chance of displacing the Brits if we joined and led the effort to integrate the Commonwealth more, the economics makes it a smart move if we ended up being the ones calling the shots.

Maybe? But seeing the reaction we get by sending Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to tell them what they need to do......... We are a joke to most of those people. They do not want to follow the US off the cliff. Maybe when we have more money to spend we will have more "friends" pretending to "respect" us. They have their problems and we have ours. It would be like a bunch of drunks living together trying to stay sober. There is a conflict between what they want and what we want. It's actually the British Empire (it was reorganized into the Commonwealth of Nations in 1931) but that's besides the point. The Brits are finally starting to get over their White Guilt and thus are more and more willing to work with the Commonwealth as a counter to the EU. If their integration efforts are successful the Empire will be revitalized and Africa will be divided between the UK and China. We qualify for membership and our claims will be strengthened once Duchess Catherine is elevated to queen (even more so now that women can take the thrown even if there are male hairs) due to her being an American. Will their efforts work out? I've no idea but if they do I'd rather it be an American rather then British empire.
A stupid idea. Would amount to the US giving up even more of it's sovereignty to what is essentialy a bunch of third world countries - and for WHAT?
You are an imperialist? So much for self determination, huh? And you say you are for democracy.
The commonwealth is a quaint meaningless organization, an anachronism from a century ago. It exists only so a lot of third worlders can pretend they're "british". It has nothing to do with power or influence, all of which has to do with national economic power and military power. The US has fundamental problems to be addressed if it isn't going to fade away, and doesn't need such pointless diversions.
We can't agree on anything important in our own country. How would we ever do anything trying do get a group of other countries to agree with us? We need to get our own house in order before we join anything else.
I don't have a lot of faith in "diplomacy". But I don't have much faith in our government these days. And less in the other governments. No need to agree on anything but an economic union and English-Roman common law on which the English speaking world is already based anyway. This isn't some superstate lie the EU, that defeats the point. So long as everyone agrees on those 2 points everything else is extra that can be worked around by normal diplomacy.

I may very well be stupid, thank you very much. But if I don't trust our government to make good decisions why in hell would I trust the so called "allies"? They are not doing anything outstanding either right now.Kind of stupid to say we can't talk to our allies. Despite Patrick's claims, the Commonwealth isn't some 3rd world hellhole made up of tin pot dictators, not unless places like Canada have gone down the drain overnight.

The Commonwealth is an economic and political union that the Brits have neglected in favor of the EU. This is starting to change and if the British efforts to integrate the Commonwealth's member states is successful they'll be masters of trade in Africa and Asia. Even Japan has expressed interest in having a role in the Commonwealth (short of outright membership) in recognition of the economic reality that would result from a more unified Commonwealth.
You're letting your disdain for all things not American cloud your judgment.
As usual, you don't know what you're talking about. The commonwealth has no money and no military. I just saw a story on CBS about how irrelevent it has become. What did they discuss at the latest meaning? That women have equal rights to succeed to the british throne. Whoa, forget the middle east. oil prices, and the national debt - THAT'S what we should foucus on. You come up with these comments that are such incredible nonsense, that I think you must be joking. That's it - you're joking, right?
