But do Open Office offers the same file format than that of Microsoft Office like .doc(Document), .xls(Spreadsheet) or .ppt(Powerpoint)?
No they don't. That is why I thought we needed something better and more advanced along the GIMP versus Adobe Photoshop lines. Open Office is not near sophisticated enough.

Open Office offers those extensions. You just have to change the format when you save.
The last time I used Open Office was in 2007. My aunt passed away and her friend had her documents saved in Open Office. I found it quite difficult to convert the files to Microsoft. Parakeet do you know whether this has changed? At that time I also found limitations and did not know about the extensions. Will check up on it again one of these days. Anything to give Gates some competition as this last new version of MS-Office really irritated me.

I have just googled this Parakeet and it would appear that one can move from MS-Office to Open Office. Not so sure about the other way round however, but will try it out one of these days:

That seems to be a good news since I'm not used in the new interface of MS Word 2007. it's more likely like Dreamweaver with all the tabs around. I might switch to Open Office sometime in the future.

I'm not sure about actually converting .odt files to .doc. I just know that you can save things in Open Office as .doc. There's a drop down box under the save menu.

It's been getting more recognition though, so hopefully we'll get some more compatibility soon.

I've just downloaded the complete program and hopefully will find time this weekend to experiment with it. That will be one of the first features I will be looking at. I am also interested in the other software of Open Office that I have not had a look at before, i.e. for spreadsheets and presentations.
