That turkey costs taxpayers a billion dollars a year in subsidies, for which they get an obsolete form of transportation on a few well-traveled corridors, plus lots of underutilized routes where nobody wants to ride. Time to perform a mercy-killing on that waste of money.

I have to admit I am of two minds on this one. Railroads are part of Americana, and I take Amtrak quite a bit. I understand your points, but I like trains.

Sure, I like trains as a historical bit of americana, just like I like tales of the old west. But just because I like the latter, it doesn't mean I want to buckle on my six shooter and ten gallon hat, saddle a horse, and go galloping across suburban lawns in phoenix. In an era of giant deficits and austerity, america can't afford to subsidize an obsolete underutilized transportation mode, which is kept alive for merely democrat political purposes.
