This sadly just doesn't seem to end. The DOW is currently around 6800, the lowest since 1997. The big hit today is in large part due to AIG's $60 billion+ reported losses (that's only in 1 quarter.) Now, the Federal government is discussing a restructuring of the AIG bailout, which would send additional money to the company. It is just adding fuel to the fire. These people don't understand captialism and they refuse to learn from history or what our founding fathers believed in. It truely is a sad period for our nation...

Good time to buy though. A lot of fundamentally good stocks are down for no real reason besides general panic. Lots of good buys if you can hold onto them for awhile.

The problem with the markets right now is that people aren't sure what companies will be able to survive this downturn. Buying commodity based stocks is probably the best option right now since they are safe, as well as companies like Amazon and Walmart due to their low prices. We really need more investor and consumer confidence at this point, but sadly Obama's plans are only making things worse, especially the recent talks about raising taxes.

And to give an update on the thread title: the DOW is officially at a 12-year low today (at 6726)...
