G20 Destruction

As most of you guys know, the G20 is going on. I live 20 minutes North of Toronto and I've never seen anything like this in Toronto. Its a shame that some people feel the need to cause troubles like this..The unfortunate part is that the Canadian Government said they would not compensate businesses for damage caused by protesters. Hopefully this will change as it would not really be fair.

It is unfortunate that people have to resort to violence, but I think the Canadian government is completely right in not paying for the damages. If they didn't cause it, why should they pay for it? That cost should come out of the pockets of those who commit the violence and have charges pressed against them.

As for the G20, I understand the frustration with the process and with leaders always thinking they can control markets. A lot of the time they don't even stick to what they say they will do at these conferences.

My opinion is that the Canadian government should cover the damages because figuratively speaking, they brought the party to town and in a sense they caused it.

Although damages should be paid by the ones causing it, the ones who caused it probably wont be found within the huge crowds of people and the tab is picked up by the private store owners. For those small businesses who rely on their shop to feed their families, they'll be hit the hardest.

The G8 was held in Huntsville Ontario which is basically in the middle of no where. There wasnt destruction reported as people probably didnt bother going that far out of the way and there was nothing to damage.

To be honest, I don't really care if Starbucks and HMV and the other super franchise stores have to pick up the tab here instead of the Canadian government. These are big businesses, they can afford these kind of occasional expenses.

I don't really blame them for rioting. After all, the whole G20 were talking about a bank tax to help prevent another bank crash in the future, even though our banks along with Japan and Brazil did not even go down during the last few years like the US and Britain.

So, just because they are successful and have money, they should pay the tab? We are just penalizing success and hence removing the incentive to be successful. Doesn't sound like a great long-term economic plan.

It should really be those who cause the damage that should be responsible. If they don't have the money, the municipality should go by its regular action in such a case.

So umm did they wreck any banks????:p

I dont think your comments equate to communism though. Thats the right wing Pundits in America that would make that equation. I have little sympathy for large companies either, but in a case like this, MYP is right. Demonstration is great, mob riots are not, and these people should be hauled in and prosecuted.

I know that many of the stores mentioned are franchises, so the large corpations wouldnt be paying anyway. Its like boycotting a BP station, your only hurting some local owner doing that.

G20 summits are like Miflin days in Madison... an excuse to burn other people's cars

put a perimeter around them, slowly close it off.... let those who wish to give up their shenanigans leave peacefully and beat the remaining rioters with nightsticks until they are unconscious... just kidding. However, they should be controlled. It isn't as if anyone is surprised about riots at a G20 summit.
