It is time to say it out loud.
You no longer get to claim some moral and ethical high ground.
In fact thanks to Alabama and the recent Trump move your religion (like it or not) is now a fringe branch of the GOP and you will forever be tied to child abuse enablement and acceptance. The whole thing was already tainted by Catholic priests but now your fellows have made it official regardless of what happens to Moore...this is the bed you have made just as Muslims have by not YELLING about terrorists.
The big difference being we can tax your religion into oblivion and probably will. Time to lay down in the mess you have made and try to sleep with your own conscience.

Primarily because our Constitution specifically addresses it and separates the two. Secondary to this would be the semi recent movement of Christianity toward political activity and the fading of its popularity.

Now Trump has decreed the separation clause invalid.

I was under the impression that churchgoing was an established institution in the States and that if some guy running for high office came out and said "well folks I don't go to church" he wouldn't have a chance?

Though in the past this was relatively accurate, even then it was lip service and little more. Recently there has been a marked decline in the popularity of Christianity in our nation as the newest generation gains power and demographic influence which is being driven home with a hammer by Trump and Moore. The Republican Congress is inadvertently increasing this trend by attempting to decimate most social progress traditionally championed by Christian morality and laying claim to the label at the same time.

There is likely to be a pretty big shift in our country over the next few decades and Christianity will not like it.

But isn't the Moore and Trump thing driven by the locals... has this anything to do with a christian morality per se? I mean do you think they are aligning themsleves on Party lines rather than Church doctrine? Is Alabama representative of churchgoing Americans or representative of a traditional voting bloc?

Whether Christians nationwide like it or not, Alabama is defining their religion just as sure as Muslim Terrorists are defining Islam. Christian "Morality" has been in question for decades thanks to the Catholic Church and this along with the New "Trump Clause" is likely to damage the religion beyond repair in the United States.
The GOP has been creeping toward becoming tied into Christianity and vice-versa for decades and will probably suffer along with it going forward. This whole mess makes me very happy I separated myself from being Republican last year.

Forever is a long time, but I agree with your point that the Churches are killing themselves by their mania for controlling the lives of other people. Hypocrisy, and its very American cousin, lying, are notable in both religion and politics, and must disgust any thinking person.

However, both religion and politics have a strong ally in the fact that there are very few thinking persons in the United States.

Before I go to bed at night, instead of counting sheep, I like to mull over ways to destroy the present constitutional system of the United States of America.

One favorite thought of mine, which actually might work under the American system of tippy-toeing around religion, is to found a new religion, based upon the worship of Food. The Christians get tax breaks on their bread and wine; why should not everything we eat be the Flesh and Blood of the Divine? Immediately, all your food expenses would be tax-deductible.

It should be possible to define your houses as places of worship where the holy rites of gastronomy are celebrated, and thereby gain additional tax advantages. Trips and foreign travel would be pilgrimages to spread the Good Word to the heathen, and so travel expenses would fall under the constitutional protection of freedom of worship. There are innumerable ways that the System can be milked by people who are sufficiently stubborn, bloody-minded and intelligent. The Oligarchs and the militaristic vampires do it ---- why not us?

If the custodians of tyranny in Washington DC tried to change the laws so that they would not apply to the Church of Comestibles, they would be faced by a formidable uprising from all the other religions, which would be afraid that this would lead to them losing their tax loopholes. My ideal is that unjust power should be placed in a trap where it can move neither forward nor back. That is such a heart-warming sight to behold! This should be our goal: to place the American monsters of misrule in so many traps and springes that their power collapses.
