A few months ago, I asked if the EU was in trouble ( http://www.politicalfray.com/showthread.php?t=1153 ). I think we all probably agree by now that it is. My next question is- is this the end for the EU?
Greece was first- saying they were fine, as bond yields continued to rise and eventually they realized they weren't. They took a bailout pushed by the ECB and IMF. Next it was Ireland- same story here except that they insisted they were fine even more than Greece had. They were the posterboys for austerity at work. It wasn't enough and they excepted a bailout this week. Now there are rumors of IMF/ECB pressure for Portgual to take a bailout in order to stop the big domino- Spain- from falling. Portugal insists they are fine.
All the while Germany is getting more annoyed with being stuck with bailout bills- as are taxpayers all over the EU. The anger is growing and bottling up as bailouts serve as the cap on the bottle. But the IMF and ECB just don't want to see anything fail and instead of letting defaults take care of things, they are trying to prop up a false prosperity. That can only go on for so long.
Do you guys think the end of the EU is near? Personally, I think it is quite possible and at the very least we will see a massive restructuring of how it operates and possibly a restructuring of the Euro currency as well.
