This is interesting, as more and more (whether right or wrong) I find evidence of resistance from parents and family to video games as being addictive and likening it to drug addiction.
This is so true. I have friends from Iraq here in the Middle East, who visited their families just after the war when all of the infrastructure was destroyed and safety was a great issue, perhaps still is to a certain extent. Yes, we can never be safe, but a situation like that is quite awful to think about. I lived in a situation in South Africa too where walking in the streets is just not contemplated and violent muggings are the order of the day. Because of the violent crime, there is little energy left to police the streets, so some of the neighbourhoods have closed themselves off with security guards, and others have neighbourhood watches. That feeling though is not nice at all, no matter what you do, that violence has a good chance to reach you there.

The frightening thing is that once you start living like that you think it is normal. A lot of South Africans delude themselves that it isn't any more dangerous there than it is in other places, as long as you are careful. But being careful means giving up a great deal of freedom, more than most of us in the west are willing to contemplate.

Yea, I once watched a documentary on a fishing company located somewhere in Africa. The main building had a guard with an ak-47 and he would talk of shooting people that tried to enter as if it was normal - most likely because it happens so often and probably because in that situation it would be "do or die"
AK47 is a powerful rifle that can even kill a person. So they mean that shooting and killing people is just normal for him? I think that a guard should shoot only to protect the place that he is destined to protect.
I guess, I mean, it didn't really go into the emotions of the guard, but yea, it seemed to not phase him much. There are kids running around with AK-47s and what not in parts of Africa... it's sad really. I'm talking like 10 year olds. Death is just part of growing up for them I guess.
It's the best job they can get though. They can try to find a UN school, or join an army and play soldier.
The worst part is how they are used though. I heard stories about Ugandan child soldiers being deliberated sent through minefields to trip off enough to clear a path. Just awful.

Death is part of surviving I think. They are usually brutally taken from their families and basically forced to do what they do, until it just takes over what they are doing and they do not think about it any more. Very sad ...I There are kids running around with AK-47s and what not in parts of Africa... it's sad really. I'm talking like 10 year olds. Death is just part of growing up for them I guess.
