Bloomberg wanted to see it continue as he saw it a sign of solidarity for the city, but public backlash especially from Staten Island (where it would take place and where Sandy did the most damage in the city) got it canceled. Generators being used for press tents in preparation of the marathon while neighboring areas were still without power created public anger.
