NYC Sues Oil Companies

Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will be seeking billions in the lawsuit to recoup money spent by the city for resiliency efforts related to climate change. The defendants in the city's federal lawsuit are BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell.

The lawsuit follows the city's announcement that it plans to divest its pension funds from fossil fuel companies

They have not gone nearly far enough. NYC should ban all vehicles using carbon based fuels. They should also stop the use all electricity generated using carbon based fuels.

Just being a bit sarcastic. Hydrocarbon fuels are largely responsible for NYC's prosperity. NYC would not have survived without it. Now their mayor wants to sue the corporations that got them there.

It should be interesting.

And Most of the major cities east of the Mississippi exist becuase they started out as slave markets, should slavery be brought back? Holding onto something obsolete just becuase it brought prosperity in the past is illogical. In any case, oil isn't the economic driver of NYC today anyway, finance is so transitioning to a green power grid isn't going to hamper their economic situation.

It isn't a matter of holding onto something obsolete because it is obsolete. First of all it is not obsolete. Most New Yorkers would not be able to get to work without hydrocarbon fuels. They were and are necessary.

I am all in favor of wind and solar power. I am not in favor of forcing the conversion away from hydrocarbons with suits and legal mandates. It just drives up the cost.

Sorry I seem to be missing something here....
1) Does New York have verifiable proof of AGW and the exact cause?
so....assuming they have managed this.... which nobody else in the world has .... but hey since when did a good story get in the way of fact.... anyway...
2) Can New York quantify the natural variablity over the AGW proportion?

Assumming they can do miraculous calculation

3) then are they able to acertain the levels attributed to the oil companies?
4) Assuming they can are they then able to split that attribution over each defendent?

and finally...

5) Is there enough money in the world to pay for the legions of lawyers that are going to be indulging on this festival of outright galactic wankery

The suit was filed in United States District Court Southern District of New York. They are blaming Sandy on Anthropogenic Global Warming. There is absolutely nothing which can be proved. However, given the liberal bias of the court, the results are unpredictable and the only ones who will profit are the lawyers.

WHEREFORE, the City respectfully requests a judgment against all Defendants
awarding the City:

1. Compensatory damages in an amount according to proof, for the costs already incurred by the City to protect City infrastructure and property, and to protect the public health, safety, and property of its residents from the impacts of climate change;

2. Compensatory damages in an amount according to proof, of the costs of actions the City is currently taking and needs to take to protect City infrastructure and property, and to protect the public health, safety, and property of its residents from the impacts of climate change;

3. An equitable order ascertaining the damages and granting an injunction to abate the public nuisance and trespass that would not be effective unless Defendants fail to pay the court-determined damages for the past and permanent injuries inflicted;

4. Costs and disbursements of this action as permitted by law;

5. Attorneys’ fees as permitted by law;

6. Pre - and post-judgment interest as permitted by law; and

7. Such other relief as this Court deems just and proper.
