Energy "independence" is overrated. It is a global market- if you have a greater competitive advantage in something else, then it might be better to make that something else. What we saw in the 70s were supply shocks but there is no doubt about it that even with complete energy independence, we would still feel the effects of supply shocks because again, it is a global market. Of course supply shocks might change the relative competitive advantages and spur us to produce more oil at that time.

That aside, with shale gas we might be on our way to producing a ton of oil anyway.

I think we should invest in renewable energy. I know our dependency on oil will be there but I feel we should cut it down as much as possible. Making Biodiesel cars is a start. There are different grade from B1 to B100. I feel the less oil we import the better off we will be. OPEC controls the flow of oil and the price if we cut down we will be better off. That is my opinion though.

We have maybe....20 yrs. of petroleum use remaining, and it will wane. Might as well make a few bucks before it becomes too expensive in comparison.
