The president outlined the many ways that Americans were coming together and the various things he was thankful for, but not once thanked God.

And that caused a stir on Twitter among conservatives.

Among the comments were things like, "So sad!" and "God help us!" Republicans across the country retweeted the Fox News headline: "Obama Leaves God Out of Thanksgiving Address."

"To give thanks for luck is to deny God much less omit!" tweeted "PastorJeffBrown," whose Twitter account lists him as a rural Oklahoma husband, father and Baptist pastor.

Obama's message carried a tone of American unity and praise for those who serve others.

"We're especially grateful for the Americans who defend our country overseas," Obama said in his Thanksgiving Day address. "To all the service members eating Thanksgiving dinner far from your families, the American people are thinking of you today."

The video of the address is below: (Go here: http://www.newsmax.com/InsideCover/...g/2011/11/25/id/419076?s=al&promo_code=D973-1

George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our sasety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

I am offended by this - religion has always been a prt of Thanksgiving. Incidentally, I am an agnostic.

It's a day about giving thanks. Just because the Conquistadors were Catholics doesn't mean anything.

Thanksgiving is an insult to Native Americans whom we killed and took away their land and then feasted and offer thanks.

That's all we can do, steal and say thanks
Kill and say sorry !!

Maybe you killed and took land. I did not kill any Native Americans or take anyone's land. Was not a damn thing I could do about it.

And by the way, I don't do Thanksgiving anyway.

The conquistadors (who beat the Pilgrims to Thanksgiving by about 3 decades) feasted with naive guides. The Pilgrims feasted with natives who saved them from starvation. The French outright allied with the natives and he British declared everything west of he Appalachians off-limits to non-natives. Aside from the Spanish things were pretty cool between the natives and whites until Manifest Destiny.

The original euro settlers came here just to raise crops on a tiny fraction of land. They were met everywhere by indian violence - at Plymouth, at Jamestown, at Roanoke, and at Natividad. The indians set the terms of interaction as violence, and ultimately lost. Hint: Don't pick a fight with a superior civilization.

To the bolded we have no idea what happened but considering the natives started having blue eyes I think we can rule out war. Most likely the colonists threw their lot in with the natives in order to survive.

People rant on about 'Jihad', but the Crusaders were much more vicious and murderous. Bit like Republicans really, I suppose. Sancta simplicitas!

The islamofascist narrative is that the trouble between Christians and muslims started with the Crusades. The REAL beginning was when muslim armies swept over the middle east and north africa in the seventh century, conquering mostly Christian lands.

That aside, the OP is exceptionally dimwitted - something that happened 800 years ago is a justification for islamofascist barbarities TODAY???
