Olympics

It is my belief that the Olympics are a fraud on society. If you look at the agenda that the average athlete goes through you will see that most jump from continent to continent playing their sport year after year. They are not amateurs. The Olympics has become little more than a playground for the athletically inclined children of the wealthy and privileged.

IMO it should be either drastically changed or cancelled. If the rich kids want a televised podium let them pay for it.

So you want an event 1,000s of years old to end just because the athletes know what they're doing? Kill joy.

Also amateurs don't get payed, pros do. You can be good and still be an amateur.

The start and finish of the definition of pro versus amateur doesn't consist of the payment issue.

To make my position clearer, in its present form the Olympics should not be supported by public funds. None at all. If you wanna play games be my guest, but no paid games until child poverty is eliminated.

Best way to cut down on "child poverty" is to cut back on our uncontrolled breeding! And no I don't know how you do that. But there is a boat load of money spent on making people parents that just have to have one or 5 of their "own". Like there is really a shortage of children without homes.

As someone with personal experience at that level of sports, I can say that those athletes are not really amateurs, but they are not wealthy and are not all children of the wealthy and priveleged.

In many sports, competing at the international level requires so much time that holding a full time job is difficult, and the costs of traveling to qualifying competitions and international competitions is very high particularly if personal equipment is involved. The equipment itself can be very expensive and require special handling. Even a dedicated runner has his own "special" equipment, multiple pairs of shoes that are broken in just right, tape, powders, lotions, running clothes, water bottles, elctrolytes, it can fill a duffle bag, and if it gets lost in transit, its a disaster to that runner.

Competing in an international event may require several weeks, you have to travel there in advance, spend some time training and becoming familar with the climate, people, arena, equipment.

I don't think anyone competes at that level without financial assistance, but those athletes give up a lot to do it. Their sport is their entire life, it's more than their career, every waking moment is spent working or thinking about their sport. In that sense, they are not amateurs. But they are extremely talented, the best of the best, people blessed with natural ability and the dedication to refine that ability to its peak. If you think anyone can reach that level if they only had the time and money, you are very wrong.

I don't care one way or another. I just think its wrong to spend public money on it. Nobody pays for my sport.

I agree with your point, set up a permanent stadium at Olympia and stop the rotation. That alone would save most of the money. Fund it via the UN, too.

It's both economical and traditional.

I totally agree with this. This is how Obama, Michelle and Oprah looked really less than dignified to me in scrambling to make a case for Chicago. The focus seems to be on so many other things rather than the sport itself.

There is a way.

Rich countries tend to have declining populations.

Most population growth in rich countries is from immigration.

Solution: make the poor countries rich.

I agree, the federal government should not be supporting the Olympics. Thats not the role of the federal government, but I also think its not the governments business to provide health care or retirement plans.

If the people in a state or a city want to go after the Olympics, thats their business. At that level, I think people have a voice.

That is not a solution. How can one make poor countries rich if they don't even know what "rich" means? If they did, they would not have been poor, but rich.

I know the meaning of rich. I live below the poverty line. Funny how your logic fails. :p
