Palestine, backed by Arab leaders, asked the United States to convince Israel to curb settlement construction within the next month or face a breakdown of peace talks. As always, it is a very sticky matter.

Thoughts?

Palestine needs to give the 'peace talks' the finger and declare independence. They have a gov't, military, national police force, a growing economy and international support (including elements in the West). They can survive and if Israel continues with the status quo (settlements, denial of water, ect.) or attempts to stop independence, it'll be an act of war on a state internationally recognized as independent, a state with lots of powerful friends.

So long as the PA recognizes Hamas as rebels and Gaza as illegally occupied territory (which they already do), they should escape any meaningful charges of terrorist support.

Lol....

The Palestinainas don't want talks. They want dead Israelis.

Recently (end of August) when talks were to start w/Obama and Netenyahu Hamas assassinated 4 people in a car... then tried again a couple days later (they shot a pregnant woman)

excerpted.....

Declaring war on negotiations promoted by U.S. President Barack Obama a few hours before he was to inaugurate fresh talks at a White House banquet with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Hamas militants who are backed by Iran said the killings were
just the first phase.

"This attack is a chain in a series of attacks, some have been executed, and others will follow," Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, told Reuters.

The Hamas armed wing, Izz el-Deen al-Qassam, issued a statement earlier saying it "announces its full responsibility for the heroic operation in Hebron".

Hamas doesn't want peace. They want dead Israelis. Iran wants to keep the US and Israel off balance and occupied in Israel. They are doing a good job of it.

They have independence. They have 2 independent states for most purposes.

They have been at war in varying degrees for over a decade. You think this declaration will accomplish what?

they have a gov't,

Which piece are you referring to? What government? In Gaza Hamas fought a civil war with Fatah and won, held bogus elections and refuses to hold any more.

military,

Really? Can you post up what their uniforms look like? Do they have just an army? what is the composition of this military? Who is their chief officer?

national police force,

Same question.

a growing economy

Is that why they needed emergency supplies in Gaza? They have no economy to speak of. They exist on international aid.

and international support (including elements in the West).

Who are these supporters?

They can survive and if Israel continues with the status quo (settlements, denial of water, ect.) or attempts to stop independence, it'll be an act of war on a state internationally recognized as independent, a state with lots of powerful friends.

lol - bullshit.

The fact is that Israel has pursued a policy of de facto imposed independence on them whether they want it or not.

Oh... that's the only obstacle?

Dude, you have no clue what you are talking about. You post in threads related to the region and the Israelis that are so utterly lacking in fact and familiarity that they almost read like you did it on purpose.

The Palestinians have no government, no military, no police, no economy.... Hamas runs Gaza. Fatah runs the West Bank only through bribery. Your faith in the Palestinian people ignores the fact that the people with the real power have very little problem killing their own to keep that power. They have no interest in giving it up nor in making peace with Israel.

Should they decide to fight a war with Israel they will lose. They will lose quickly. This is why they do not fight wars with Israel. They launch terror attacks and fight asymmetrically to prevent peace from taking hold. No state is coming to the aid of Hamas nor Fatah nor the Palestinians. None. Iran sends money and weapons but they don't expose themselves to actual retailiation because they'll lose. Look up operation Praying Mantis to get an idea of what Iran learned about that.

Palestine is not a nation, but a collection of Arab refugees who are not welcome in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, or elsewhere. Israel has been forced into the role of babysitting. The situation is similar to working folks here in the States who are forced to support inner city welfare bums and bummettes, but much worse.

The wisest and most compassionate solution would be for surrounding Arab/Muslim nations to absorb the "refugees," but that's not going to happen. Compassion is not integral to Islam.

Indeed.

I find it useful to point out that the Israelis aren't the only state with a great big fence on their border with Gaza.

The greater Arab nation has no time or place for the Palestinians other than giving them sopme cash and weapons to use agaist fellow Palestinians and Israelis.

It isn't unknown.

Many european leftists are deeply suspicious of Israelis. Others go further.

Look into Jimmy Carter's recent history with regard to Israel. He had 14 people from an advisory board resign after he released Palestine: Peace not Apartheid.

Further, look at the populations at issue. From a purely amoral position of self-preservation it makes sense to ally with the stronger rather than weaker. There are about 300,000,000 Arabs worldwide (as an ethnicity not as Muslims). There are about 13,000,000 Jews world wide. There are large numbers of Arabs now living abroad and they represent a source of political power in western states. Jews in relative terms do not.

The UN: the UN has been reduced to despots condemning democratic Israel where Arabs have more liberties and rights than they do in most if not all Arab states. The UN is a powerful political tool for legitimizing the illigitimate.

Petro-dollars: The Saudis have spents many billions worldwide to spread fundamentalist Islam which does not play well with others. Those dollars also bring jobs to otherwise disinterested parties. It is no big leap to find common cause with those who pay your mortgage.
