Was a time in the United States that a certain level of respect and even compassionate kindness was the norm in even the most heated discussion or disagreements, this allowed for a level of decorum and function within our two party system and amongst the population/legislature. This standard has been turned into a negative in the last few years and crippled a once relatively smooth government and citizenry making it completely dysfunctional.
Today PC is used as an insult where is used to be a compliment and this has made conversation and compromise literally impossible.

I find this to be an unfortunate and disturbing situation.

I'm not sure I really follow your argument.

to summarize what I think you are saying...

political animosity is tied to people disliking "political correctness"

if this is the case, I celebrate any rebellion against thought control and the inhibition of free speech, even if it is done with animosity.

It clearly does, social media in particular as well as anonymity allow people to say whatever pops into their mind with no repercussion....this freedom is double edged in that it makes clear the mentality of the individual but also creates an atmosphere of angry reaction. The type of reaction is my point.

some news is outright fake. most is propaganda, while not fake per se.
it is aimed at moving people in a direction rather than observing and reporting.

I believe free speech extends to the people reporting the news (however fake or propagandist it may be) , but it also extends to anyone calling them out.

The Onion is fake news, Breitbart is fake news the opinion shows on Fox that present themselves as newscasts are fake news (though the actual news shows are actually pretty well researched and hard hitting). Biased news (such as anything from Fox or NBC) isn't fake news, just truth with spin. Fake news has a very narrow definition that Trump tries to obscure becuase it's a convenient way to discredit inconvenient elevations.

I understand your though process. You mentioned in your OP "respect" in terms of political correctness which implies a somewhat Kantian view of the person, however, for me its also one of boundaries. I may not respect someone, or I may not respect their views but I know the boundaries within which I can interact with them based on the context of common decency.

I used to be one on another site but became so dissallusioned by the level of debate; it was always the abortion threads, the levels of vitriol that oozed through these arguments was astounding. Some of the posters proffessing to be devout christians but the hate that they exuded was just beyond me.
Again on the same site all you had to do was mention the word "muslim" and all of a sudden you had a KKK Kegger fest going full swing...screw freedom of speech...but hey the good thing about the internet is you can close it off and watch a good film and have a dram... or two... or three...

The problem I that all decency is on one side. I spend a lot of my life putting Nazis on ignore when they call me 'taffy' or tell me I shag sheep - the height of wit in right-wing circles, particularly on the three-millionth repetition - but if I answer back, I get dreadful complaints.

Yeah...being called a sweaty loses it's charm in the same way. That aside though the caveat with chat forums is that if you want to engage you need to engage on your own terms or have a thick skin and let all the crap wash over you.

I was having a chat about this type of thing with my young lass the other day about "cyber" bullying. I understand that in the world we live in social media is important(?) but to get to the state of suicide because of being abused on facebook or twitter is beyond me. Turn it off!

Politically Correct.
