Greetings, Sally!
I envy anyone who lives in the botanical wonderland of Australia. I hope that you have had the opportunity to see the marvelous wildflowers of south-west Australia --- I would dearly like to see them in their glory!
I take a discrete interest in detective stories; I prefer those which are intricate puzzles, with as little blood and gore as may be necessary. I hope Australian television will produce more delightful confections such as Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
Have you read the series of Judge Dee Murder Mysteries by Robert van Gulik? In addition to the puzzles they present, they are the most painless way to learn about the culture of traditional China.
I like most of what Agatha Christie wrote, though she did get a bit ga-ga in her old age. Her murder mysteries make excellent material for teaching English as a second language. The vocabulary and grammar are fairly simple, the puzzles interesting, and they provide an insight into an English culture that is now extinct --- except, perhaps, in New Zealand and Adelaide, Australia.
