The title says it all. Senator McCain has died. One thing to his credit is that he did not add pork spending to his to bills. A negative was his opposition to President Trump.

John McCain, who shed a playboy image in his youth to become a fighter pilot, revered prisoner of war and both an independent voice in the Republican Party and its 2008 presidential nominee, died on Saturday, little more than a year after he was told he had brain cancer. He was 81.

We all knew it was coming, but it's still sad. It happened a lot quicker than I thought it would. The man had a lot of things to his credit, and he will be remembered for much more than just his fiscal record.

When John McCain ran for President, the left hated him. When he opposed the President, the left loved him.

The big question is who will replace McCain in the Senate. The governor of Arizona will pick a Republican. The seat will not be on the November ballot.

It's going to be pretty difficult to fill that man's shoes, no matter from which side of the aisle they make the pick. ;)

The pick will be from the Republican side of the aisle. Arizona law specifies that the appointment is from the same party. The seat will be in the 2020.

But he was a RINO, so it is best the replacement is NOT the same.

Yeah what would he know about it, anyway? I'm sure there are people here who have personally experienced being tortured by a foreign government way more than that guy ever did.

I happen to! The definition of torture is where PERMANENT damage is done to an individual. The only thing hurt is their feelings. Waterboarding does NOT cause permanent physical damage. Otherwise, the military would certainly not routinely do it in basic training (my son had it done to him in Basic Training).

McCain did indeed experience actual torture, as he received permanent damage.

Mmmmkay I guess waterboarding is just an interesting experience that everyone should try sometime. Maybe the next kiddie attraction at the county fair, right? After all, that's why the army and intelligence use it, because it's an interesting and educational experience. Totally not torture at all. Why settle for some chintzy VR system when you can simulate drowning someone much more realistically for free? How exciting! Why haven't I ever tried this myself?

Gee, I wonder if there might be some conditions in which waterboarding doesn't rise to the level of torture. I mean in all seriousness, you do have a point. The army wouldn't needlessly torture its own soldiers. You know how they avoid that?

The soldiers know going into it that it's just another kind of challenge they can set themselves, like not just taking off your gas mask in the CS tent but taking a big fucking deep breath and walking slowly out.

i.e., To the soldiers, it's just another exercise for them. They've been taught to follow their government unquestioningly. Trained to it. That's the whole point of basic training. And they know the government would not actually kill them, either intentionally or by accident. The same way you know to keep your ass down on the live fire obstacle course, but you can look over and see the drill sergeants standing up and walking around yelling at people. The weapons they're firing over your head are mounted on a rack system, and they can't be pointed down that far. But you still play along and keep your ass down. You're completely conditioned to it at that point.

Now let's see.... how might that be different for those who can't even speak the language of the people who are providing them this wonderful opportunity to experience realistic simulated drowning?

The bottom line is: waterboarding "fools" the subject's mind into thinking he is drowning, when in fact not. This fooling often results in valuable information being given, w/o actually harming the subject. End of story. For some odd reason (emotional I assume), JM was against it.

The left is not going to be happy with the replacement for John McCain. The replacement will certainly be more conservative than former Senator John McCain.

Heh. Maybe. We'll see. Though you must admit the term is rather slippery, so I don't know how we could judge subjectively. :)

Ach I just remembered I think the gov. gets to appoint his replacement, so you're probably right. Does replacement have to run in November, or does he get a free couple years?

I mean if I'm honest I don't think there's going to be much of a blue wave this fall. A little lapping at the shores, maybe. Hard to say. The GOP has done a stellar job of locking up a lot of districts through gerrymandering and voter suppression. Go ahead and gloat while you can. The more you stretch a rubber band, the more energy it has when it finally breaks. ;)
