Should prostitution be legal?

I've never understood why it is illegal. If it were legal, the pimps would have no power, and the pimps' treatment of their 'girls' is where most of the real crime occurs.

I'm a woman, by the way, and while it isn't something I'd like to do for a living, I don't see why it is illegal.

I definitely agree with you that it should be legalized... it would be much safer. Of course it would still happen illegally - but at least it would cut down on the amount of illegitimate "pimperies"

Yeah, I was working my way down through the sections and found it right after I posted. My post was triggered by something I thought of in another thread.

I don't even care if it is legalized and regulated the way it is in Amsterdam or in parts of Nevada. I think all the criminal statutes should be taken off the books.

I'm sure that prostitutes would resist it being legalized, right now there are too many plusses in terms of high income, no taxes and not too much interference by Government. Safety is an issue of course, but perhaps legalizing prostitution is going to take the prostitution out of prostitution, may just as well then take a regular job somewhere I would think.

I'm not sure... they could still pull in a pretty big haul with it being legalized. I mean, look at strippers... good ones can make over a grand in a night - and they don't even have to put out! There would always be room for those "quality" places to work and if you were to get a job at a quality place... I can't really see the job being too difficult :?

In my opinion if a man or woman decided s to sell their assets for cash then they should be able. as a job they should pay their taxes and National insurance. a legalised profession would help reduce human trafficking and make it safer for the vulnerable to work

The hookers pull in a great haul in the legalized brothels in Nevada. They also have the priceless benefit of working in a secure environment with a few bouncers and a doctor checking their clients for signs of STDs.

I think most prostitutes turn their money over to pimps, and are pretty much slaves of their pimps. They need the pimps because they might get arrested, and they need someone to post bail. Legalize it, and that part goes away or is minimized.

I still don't understand why it should be illegal at all. Look at the fine lines we draw. It's not illegal for a woman to have a boyfriend that supports her, even if the money is the only reason she is with him. It's not illegal to marry for money, either.

Most of the people who use prostitutes like it to be strictly confidential. When one starts to bring in legal things to make it official, wonder how confidential "confidential" would be. Not to mention the license fees. Can't see how it would work out to get the Government to interfere. They will no doubt just bungle the whole situation again.

We do have legalized prostitution in Nevada, in regulated brothels, usually way out in the country. But since it is limited to brothels, it hasn't cut into the illegal kind.

Pay for play takes the hypocrisy out of some relationships. It also means that a guy that is simply horny should find a PFP girl and spend his time trying to seduce some girl with sweet talk and then walk out on her. Personally I think it makes a lot of sense.

ANYWAY, all joking aside (even if I am slightly amused at THIS topic being one of the most talked about here) I'll refer to what I said in the other Prostitution thread on here. The reason it's not legalized is because no one can monitor it. You can do out and find sex from someone who can give it up for free if you're pay for a few beers. Plus anything like this the government will want a piece of the pie which will mean taxes strict health laws... so you know more shady places will continue to sale their product for cheaper. just how it is folks.

If you want sex, do it the old fashion way and find a loose skank. Anyway, that's what I think...

Glee, I can see your admiration of your "sisters" of the easier but not pernicious persuasion is almost unbounded. The label "loose skank" is one of jovial gender endearment, right?

Now, I feel bad for individuals that use promiscuity as a crutch for self-esteem. Don't get me wrong about that. But good gosh, women have been making a living off sex for quite sometime.

If you have the History Channel, you might have caught a program about the founding of Australia. As the initial penal colony sank into decay (rape of the local natives being symptomatic of it) the officer-in-charge requested women to help civilize the place. A ship full of convict women were collected and sent out. On the way they converted their "convict ship" into a floating brothel (run by one of the women) when they stopped at various ports along the way for supplies.

Now these criminally enterprising individuals went on to help found the fine country of Australia, some become very successful business owners (and not just of bars or brothels) but of all sorts of endeavors. A few even rose to become part of the upper society, marrying into upper class families.

The story was titled "Voyage of the Courtesans" on the series Secrets of the Dead. I love it when bad girls do well.

Well said and totally on the mark. I was also thinking that if you legalized prostitution, maybe it won't be prostitution anymore? The whole thing about prostitution is people can get sex in secret. Those who provide the service take a risk, but is rewarded for the risk with no worries about taxes. So if legalized it won't be like that anymore. Sort of will take the prostitution out of everything. People will still continue as before.

Yes, instead of 'legalizing' it, with monitoring and taxes and such, just repeal all the laws that make having or soliciting sex for money. I mean, kissing is 'legal' but not 'legalized'.

As long as prostitution is illegal, I think that both parties to the transaction should be arrested. The idea that only the prostitute is guilty is ridiculous.

A number of places do exactly that, even providing fake prostitutes to lure the errant to their doom. Then they not only arrest them, but some newspapers publish the names of the arrested "johns" in order to dissuade others from the temptation. I do so love the righteous do-gooders of the world. Okay, that might be a bit tongue-in-cheek.

Totally agreed. Almost the equivalent of what is going on in offices all over the world. Also the movie industry apparently. Prostitution is not only limited to those who walk the streets ....
