Should prostitution be legal?

A number of places do exactly that, even providing fake prostitutes to lure the errant to their doom. Then they not only arrest them, but some newspapers publish the names of the arrested "johns" in order to dissuade others from the temptation. I do so love the righteous do-gooders of the world. Okay, that might be a bit tongue-in-cheek.

So what is wrong with that, given that prostitution is illegal? Do you think only the prostitutes are guilty?

Oh, I don't think anyone should be arrested except for endangering public health if they knew they had an infectious disease and continued to endanger others, regardless of which side of the transaction they were on.

And everything is illegal somewhere. Breaking some laws is as natural as breathing, when they, like the first emperor of China, want to control every aspect of the commoner's life.

This thread have been revived...

I agree with you in one point. The one the spreads infectious diseases will be the one who will be arrested. But how will we know who will spread these kinds of diseases? If a certain persons do it with several others?

Exactly. And sometimes the person who has the virus may not be as sick as someone else who has the same virus, but be a carrier anyway. Or a person may be sick with an infectious disease and be misdiagnosed by doctors who have missed it. I guess one should then arrest those doctors? :)

I think it depends on the situation. For example, if the prostitute was diagnosed and didn't want other to know about it, he/she will bribe the doctor to keep it secret and tell the officials that he/she is negative. That can be the time that the doctor should be arrested.

Will be interesting to prove however. Guess this is one kind of disease that has so many lies attached to it. Probably an incentive in its own right to stay away from prostitutes.

I think the best way to prevent these kind of diseases is just do it with your boy/girlfriend or if it cannot be avoided, use preventive methods like condoms.

There have been murder convictions, I think, of one or two people who deliberately set out to infect as many people as possible with AIDS.

But I don't see how you would go about arresting everybody who spread any venereal disease. How could you arrest men for spreading chlamidia, when it generally has no symptoms in men?

I don't know whether there has been murder convictions, but I know there is quite a bit of it going on in Southern Africa, where AIDS is completely out of control. Not to mention unprotected rape.

Well, you'd assume they wouldn't know about it. Chlamydia-infected men, i mean.

On your AIDS-people, what about people who willingly accept a "gift"?

That's my point. You can't make passing on a venereal disease a crime, when people have no way of knowing that they have it.

On your other point, I have no idea what you mean?

Well it the intent was to harm another person then it has to be a crime. For example in South Africa you may find someone using a tainted syringe with the objective to create AIDS in another person. Usually that person has AIDS as well. Sort of a hopeless crime. Or someone who knows they have AIDS infect someone else with it with the intent to infect them. Not that easy to prove, but I think in certain cases it can be proven.

Erm, it's generally purposely infecting someone with AIDS. Or being infected, with knowledge.

Also known as "bug chasing".

Ah, i found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugchasing_and_giftgiving

Also, there's a film called "the Gift" that explores the people's reasons for it.

Thanks for this Dirk. Learned something new. Almost the equivalent of adolescents who are cutting themselves?
