Should Social Security be a voluntary program?

I oppose force. I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't like force. Yet, the federal government feels it is necessary to take money from your paycheck every payday to fund Social Security, a mandatory retirement program you have to take part in.

Personally, I don't expect Social Security to be around when I'm ready to retire. Even if it is around, I don't find myself accepting it, but if I do I'll certainly donate it to charity.

Anyway, with that being said, should people be responsible for whatever decisions they make? If someone doesn't save money for their retirement, isn't that their fault? Why force everyone to pay into such a system that is prone to abuse anyway (that's how Clinton balanced the budget and it's still raided by politicians!).

What do you think? Should Americans have the choice to opt out of Social Security?

A lot of countries do just fine without socialized retirement benefits. I think a transition to a private system is possible, but won't happen due to politics. As for individuals opting out, do you mean they don't pay taxes now either? That won't work- the system needs the tax revenues from today to pay the checks of today.

The OP seemed to be asking if we should allow people to avoid the payroll tax as a means of opting out of SS. My comment simply pointed out the inevitable cost of allowing such a thing.

Its a statical topic. It says all people including you will need social security regardless of your situation and everyone's health and security is important for all society, also in this way cost prices will be reduced.

You must have a commitment fuse before you start to drive at least because statistics clearly expose that there will be accidents.

you might do not agree but it isn't really bad solving common problems with lower cost, as a whole.
