Should we be building the F-35?

The F-35 is the latest and greatest aircraft that the military is pursuing as it looks to bring American aircraft to the next generation (despite already being ahead of everyone else). While the plane is no doubt amazing, the costs that come with it are staggering and just another sign of DC's apathy of our dire debt situation.

An interesting piece from the Atlantic: http://www.theatlantic.com/national...-weapon-that-costs-more-than-australia/72454/

What does everyone think?

Maybe we should ask France, Briton and Italy what we should do. This government don't care what we think anyway.

My Bro-in-law says yes. He works for Boeing (full disclosure - but on satellites).

His argument... the teams of engineers and workers who design and build these things are hot commodities. The process is difficult. It is not something that can be dropped and quickly resumed. There are others such as materials design that have other uses etc.

We had long discussion on this. We both agree that we should buy enough to keep the program viable but scale it back due to budget constraints.

We should always strive to advance our tech, the issue is paying for double what we agree to, letting projects go 3x over their schedule, etc. We can afford this, we just need to keep from getting robed blind in the process.

Although the F-22 Raptor was developed by the United States, it should be noted that the F-35 JSF has been developed by a consortium of countries that have also placed orders for the technologically advanced aircraft.
